| Delta Air Line's approximately 1,000 employees in Dallas-Fort Worth are getting paid a combined total of $7 million in bonuses today. The Atlanta-based airline has an annual tradition of sharing profits with employees on Valentine's Day. This year, the company said, it's paying a total of $1.3 billion in bonuses to its more than 80,000 employees. It's the second highest payout to employees in Delta's history. Delta doled out a record $1.5 billion in bonuses to employees in 2016. Bonuses are paid out in cash or as contributions to retirement accounts, depending on what employees prefer. This year, the bonuses make up about 14 percent of each Delta employee's annual pay. In Dallas-Fort Worth, Delta has employees at DFW International Airport, Dallas Love Field and a call center that handles flight reservations and service requests. Most commercial airlines share profits with their employees. The profit-sharing agreements and the formulas for it are usually part of labor negotiations with airline employees. George Ferguson, senior analyst for airlines for Bloomberg Intelligence, said the compensation structure — which bases employee pay on a company's success — works well in an industry where profits can fluctuate significantly based on fuel prices and the state of the economy. He said profit -sharing is "a way for the airlines to allow the employees, especially the pilots, to participate in good years for the company, and it protects them in a down year." Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is sharing $544 million in profits with employees this year, up slightly from $543 million last year.
