Extra $25 dining vouchers for NSW residents

By Josh Dye

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced extra “dine and discover” vouchers and a permanent extension of outdoor dining as the government seeks to revive the state’s economy post-lockdown.

All adults will be eligible for two $25 vouchers in December to help boost spending in restaurants and cafes.

“This is all about driving summer trade,” Mr Perrottet said at a press conference this morning.

“People go out and they spend more than $25. That’s injecting more money into the economy.”

Restaurants, bars and cafes will be offered $5000 in grants and be able to expand alfresco dining into their car parks and gardens.

“We’re also offering up to $500,000 grants to councils right across the state to improve their high streets or improve amenity,” the Premier said.

He said the measures were a way of cutting red tape and “getting government out of the way”.

“We want our businesses to be free and to flourish.”

The vouchers are expected to cost the state budget $250 million and the al fresco package will cost $66 million.

Australia will need surge in renewables, electric vehicles to meet UN emissions goal

By David Crowe

Australia will need a surge in renewable power and a dramatic shift to electric cars to meet a call from the United Nations to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as Prime Minister Scott Morrison tries to quell fresh fears from the Nationals over a deal on climate change.

A new analysis shows the federal government will have to deepen its carbon cuts to 47 per cent by 2030 to meet the goal set on Tuesday for nations attending a UN climate summit that begins on November 1, stepping up demands on Mr Morrison while he considers whether to go.

But senior Nationals ministers are warning against stronger action on climate ahead of a party room meeting this Sunday, despite assurances from Energy Minister Angus Taylor that industries such as mining and gas will not suffer in the policy to be revealed next week.

Crowd boost for Matildas matches in Sydney

By Josh Dye

The Australian women’s soccer team has been given an exemption to host a crowd of 22,500 people at two friendly matches in Sydney later this month.

The Matildas host Brazil at Commbank Stadium in Parramatta on October 23 and 26.

The stadium’s capacity is 30,000 patrons, but under NSW public health orders crowds are capped at 5000.

The state government this morning announced an exemption for the venue. It will be able to host crowds at 75 per cent capacity for the two matches.

“We’re all desperate to see Sydney regain its rightful crown as the sporting capital of Australia and I can’t think of a better showcase than the upcoming Matildas versus Brazil blockbuster games,” NSW Sports Minister Natalie Ward said.

Yesterday, men’s national coach Graham Arnold appealed to the NSW government for large crowds at the Socceroos’ home World Cup qualifier next month.

The Matildas game will occur during the 14-day quarantine period after players arrive from overseas.

The $66 million plan to revive Sydney’s outdoor dining

By Tom Rabe and Alexandra Smith

Restaurants, bars and cafes will be offered $5000 in grants and be able to expand alfresco dining into their car parks and gardens this summer as part of a government package to revive the NSW hospitality industry post-lockdown.

As foreshadowed by this masthead last month, outdoor dining exemptions on footpaths for small bars and pubs will also be made permanent under the government’s $66 million Alfresco Restart Initiative, set to be announced by Treasurer Matt Kean on Thursday.

The government will also provide two new “dine and discover” vouchers to the public in an effort to spur economic growth after the 2021 Delta-lockdown, which cost the NSW economy billions.

Under the new dining plan, the first 5000 hospitality businesses to successfully apply for the new government grant will be given $5000 to expand or make improvements to their alfresco areas.

Victorian renovation rescue with sector set to get back on the tools next week

By Paul Sakkal and Michael Fowler

Victorians will be able to resume home renovations as early as next week, as health authorities consider allowing home visits earlier than planned if hospitalisations and case numbers allow.

While much of the industry has already returned from a two-week shutdown announced last month, industry leaders say they were told indoor home renovations would be banned until the state reached its 80 per cent double-dose COVID-19 vaccination target.

Home renovations are set to be permitted earlier than scheduled.

However, the government has confirmed the industry will reopen once 70 per cent of people over 16 are fully vaccinated, according to two industry sources who spoke anonymously because the government was yet to make the decision public. There had previously been confusion as to whether renovations fell into the 70 or 80 per cent reopening phase.

Government forecasts suggest the state will reach the 70 per cent milestone as early as Friday next week rather than Tuesday, October 26 which was the date earmarked in the reopening road map.
