SES receives more than 200 calls as wind, rain hits Victoria - The Age

The SES has had more than 200 calls and minor landslides have been reported along Mt Dandenong Tourist Road after storms hit Victoria overnight.

Meteorologist Christopher Arvier said wind gusts of 78km/h were recorded at Frankston and St Kilda in the early hours of Saturday morning while Ferny Creek recorded 62 millimetres of rain and Mt Dandenong 56 millimetres to lead the state.

“It’s still pretty windy out there but the severe weather warning has been contracted to further south down the Bass coast so while it’s still going to be windy through Melbourne this morning, the strongest winds have passed over the city already,” Mr Arvier said.

“There are still showers continuing with the heaviest falls in the eastern suburbs, which is typical for this sort of weather pattern, we expect things to continue for the first part of the day and then it should clear up a little bit by the afternoon.

“Through the city, there were widespread falls of 30-35 millimetres and 26 millimetres for the city and around 15 millimetres for the western suburbs.

“That rain fed into the rivers, so we have a moderate flood warning for the Yarra River and minor flood warnings for Dandenong Creek and Bunyip River.”

Mr Arvier said while there would be some showers continuing over Sunday and Monday, the lack of significant rain would let rivers recede, but not without a little flooding.

“But the Yarra River does usually take time to go down once it starts going up, so it will probably remain pretty high until Monday which could potentially see some minor flooding downstream of bike paths and things like that through the Yarra.

“The more significant impacts could be upstream where there has been more rainfall and we could see some roads closed that are close to the river in the Yarra, Watts River part of the world.”

Mr Arvier said there could be patches of sunshine around Melbourne later this afternoon and conditions are forecast to improve by Wednesday with temperatures of 25 degrees.

The Victorian SES received 207 calls in the 24 hours to 6.15am Saturday with 109 calls about trees down, 52 for building damage and 36 for the impacts of flooding.

An SES spokesperson said that number was expected to rise as people woke up and noticed storm damage and anyone who needs emergency assistance should call the SES on 132 500.

Lilydale (26 calls), Emerald (16 calls) and Frankston (12 calls) were the busiest units overnight.

Lilydale SES volunteers also reported multiple calls about debris and rocks from minor landslides on the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road between Browns Road and Inverness Road.

The SES encouraged people to avoid the area until it has been properly assessed, with Victoria Police and Vic Roads also aware of the reports.

The wind and rain followed dramatic scenes on Thursday night when heavy hail turned the streets white in parts of Melbourne’s north, and severe flash-flooding hit Traralgon after wild weather battered Victoria and NSW.

Severe weather warnings remain in place in some coastal areas along the east with strong winds possible today and moderate flood warnings remain in place for the Watts Rivers at Healesville which is expected to peak later this morning.
