Unrecognisable photo of NSW Premier - NEWS.com.au

As the people of NSW try to get to know their new premier, an unrecognisable photograph has emerged of Dominic Perrottet.

Dominic Perrottet says he'll be NSW’s first “family premier” – a fitting title for a father-of-six with 11 siblings of his own.

The 39-year-old plans to use his time as the state’s top official to improve the lives of NSW families, as opposed to the “infrastructure premiers” of old.

“Until now, all of our Liberal premiers have been infrastructure premiers, building roads, rail, schools and hospitals for communities right across our state, and that will not change with me,” Mr Perrottet said this week.

“But I will also be a family premier, focusing on how we can make life better for working families, living the Liberal values of opportunity, aspiration and hard work.”

Mr Perrottet has said his own upbringing, as the third eldest of a dozen opinionated siblings, prepared him for a career in politics.

Mr Perrottet’s mother Anne, a counsellor, has written on a now-defunct blog that she and her husband John, who works for the World Bank, took inspiration from their faith – and from a childhood friend of hers who had 13 siblings – in their decision to have a large family.

Anne and John Perrottet, who now live in the US, sent Mr Perrottet to the Catholic school Redfield College in Dural, where the school’s chaplain was an Opus Dei priest.

However, Mr Perrottet recently told The Australian newspaper he's not a member of the order.

A picture taken in 1999, the year before Mr Perrottet graduated from Redfield, shows him as a teenager smiling in a striped shirt surrounded by his siblings and parents.

Mr Perrottet’s upbringing may also have inspired him to have a large family of his own.

He and his wife Helen, a lawyer, are parents to Charlotte, Amelia, Annabelle, William, Harriet and Beatrice.

“It’s demanding,” he said this week when asked how he planned to juggle family commitments and his new job.

“When you’ve got family commitments, balancing work and family life is a challenge for every single person right across the state.

“Ultimately, what I might lose in time, I gain in perspective. Everyone has their attributes, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and I’m no different to that.”

People who work with Mr Perrottet have said that while he was treasurer, he would try to use any days he had off from work to spend time with his family.

But he conceded this week there would be even less time for that.

“They are decisions you contemplate, you speak to your family about,“ he said.

“There will be challenges, I know. Perhaps, disappointments of things, of family events and time that I may not have.”

Mr Perrottet’s ascendancy to Premier was the culmination of a rocket career in state politics.

The former NSW Young Liberal President and Sydney Uni-educated solicitor was elected to parliament as a 28-year-old, representing Castle Hill between 2011 and 2015, and Hawkesbury between 2015 and 2019, before becoming the member for Epping that year.

He was given the ministerial portfolios for finance and services in 2014, property in 2015, and industrial relations in 2017, before becoming Treasurer in 2017.

Mr Perrottet, a social and economic conservative and a practising Catholic, has opposed same-sex marriage and decriminalising abortion.

But he said it would “sad” if people thought he shouldn’t serve as the state’s leader because of his Catholic faith.

“My religious views and my Christian faith is something I am incredibly proud of, as many people across our state are,” he said.

“Does that in any way take away my capacity to serve as premier? Well, I do not think so, and I think it is a sad thing that some people do.”
