Bushfire emergency continues for parts of Perth's south as 100 firefighters battle blaze - 9News

There are 100 firefighters on the scene, trying to contain an out-of-control bushfire threatening lives and homes in the southwest of Perth.

Overnight wind changes are expected to hamper efforts to contain the fire, Incident Controller David Gill warned.

"That'll put some pressure on the western end of the fire edge and may push the fire closer to the coast later this evening," he told 9News.

Emergency crews spent most of Friday battling the blaze, which started around 8.30am near Rockingham, deploying a large waterbomber Hercules to drop retardant in an attempt to stop the spread of the fire.

The Department of Emergency Services initially issued a warning around 10.45am local time (1.45pm AEDT) and that remains in place at 9.50pm local time (12.50am AEST).

An evacuation centre at Success Regional Sports Centre has closed but some Kwinana residents are being told to leave now if the way is clear.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive," the latest Emergency WA warning says.
