Brisbane News Live: Queen's Wharf opening date set; Three dead in 'very confronting' North Qld bus crash - Brisbane Times

Unpaid debts led the Queensland government to suspend the licences of 131,533 drivers in the financial year to June 24.

The State Penalties Enforcement Register (SPER), run from an office in the Treasury, includes licence suspensions among the options for dealing with people who are unable or unwilling to pay their debts.

The to-date figure for last financial year was lower than 2022-23, when 190,704 debtors had their licence suspended. Individuals can have their licences suspended more than once.

In 2021-22, the government suspended the licences of 256,1667 debtors, although that number was inflated due to a previous COVID-related reduction in enforcement action.

Treasurer Cameron Dick used the latest state budget to invest in areas he hopes can return an extra $970 million in fines and debts to the government over the next four years.

Thanks for joining us for our live updates. We’ll be back tomorrow morning. Here were Monday’s main stories:

After Sunday’s tragic bus crash in Gumlu, south of Townsville, it was confirmed three women on the bus died at the scene, one in her 20s, one in her 30s and a 56-year-old Townsville woman. Four people remained in the hospital on Monday, including two men, aged 23 and 24, in a critical condition in intensive care.

Afternoon caf-fiends are out of luck at most cafes around Brisbane – but here’s where you can still get a quality cuppa after 3pm.

Billy Slater faces his greatest litmus test at the helm of the Queensland Maroons with some big selection calls ahead of Origin III.

A meandering, occasionally incoherent and almost universally panned first-debate performance from Biden has led to calls for him to step aside, even by those loyal to him. Here are 10 potential replacement contenders.

Black-market tobacco and e-cigarettes are in the sights of authorities as overhauled vaping laws come into effect.

From now on vapes will only be allowed to be sold in pharmacies over the counter, and only after chemists have a discussion with the customer about the health harms.

Vapes will only be sold in plain packaging and without flavouring under the reforms, designed to protect children.

People under 18 will need a prescription to buy vapes.

Health Minister Mark Butler said the measures would protect younger generations from becoming addicted to nicotine.

Selwyn Cobbo is ready to return to the Queensland side and Brisbane coach Kevin Walters says he will be “at the forefront” of Billy Slater’s mind at the selection table.

Maroons and Melbourne winger Xavier Coates is out of the State of Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium on July 17 with a hamstring injury.

Coach Slater could slot 22-year-old Cobbo, who was left out of the 38-18 Game II loss to recover from injury niggles, straight in on the wing where he has represented Queensland before.

Cobbo had a short break in his home town of Cherbourg to recharge after missing Queensland selection for Game II. He made 137 metres from 11 runs and had two tackle busts in Brisbane’s 32-16 loss to the Warriors on Saturday.

“I think he’d be at the forefront of Billy’s mind, that’s for sure. He had another strong game for us,” Walters said.

“He got some time away from the game. He went back to Cherbourg and his family. That’s normally very invigorating for players, particularly Selwyn with time with his family.

“That’s all he needed. Just a bit of a break. I’m sure if he’s called upon he’d love to play for Queensland, but we’ve got next week against the Panthers (on Friday night) and he’s got to get his mind around that short turnaround for us.”

Premier Steven Miles has offered his sympathies to those who died or were injured in the north Queensland bus crash and also the first responders who tried to help them.

Miles sought to reassure those affected by the tragedy that all Queenslanders would be thinking of them.

At a media conference in Brisbane this afternoon, the premier made special mention of emergency services personnel, who he said “arrived to just awful scenes” on Sunday.

“I know Queenslanders truly appreciate them and everything they do,” Miles said.

The accident came amid an ongoing debate over the state of the Bruce Highway.

Miles said it was premature to speculate on whether the road itself contributed to the crash.

Since 9am today Queensland parents have snapped up 40,000 FairPlay vouchers.

There were a total of 150,000 FairPlay vouchers made available in the June state budget, as part of Premier Steven Miles’ cost-of-living relief measures.

An additional 50,000 vouchers are set aside for families with a valid Health Care or Pensioner Concession card.

The $200 vouchers are available for children aged five to 17 to help them participate in club sports.

The vouchers need to be redeemed by June 2025, allowing for both summer and winter sports, including rugby league, AFL, netball, BMX, table tennis, basketball, orienteering and abseiling.

Senior Labor Minister Tanya Plibersek has hugged embattled Labor senator Fatima Payman this morning, after the junior minister was suspended indefinitely from the party caucus for vowing to cross the floor again and vote for a motion supporting an independent Palestinian state.

The hug – after the swearing-in of Governor-General Sam Mostyn in the Senate this morning – comes after Payman was summoned to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s residence yesterday afternoon after an explosive interview on the ABC’s Insiders program, when she vowed to cross the floor in support of an independent Palestinian state.

Payman, a first-term West Australian senator who is the youngest in the party at age 29, disobeyed party rules and last week voted with the Greens motion expressing support for a Palestinian state.

Plibersek hugging Payman, captured by this masthead’s photographer, indicates support for the young senator, which goes against many Labor colleagues who were furious after she crossed the floor to vote with the Greens.

Faltering Brisbane have five middle and edge forwards unavailable for the grand-final rematch clash with Penrith.

The Broncos, in ninth position after four consecutive losses, host the Panthers on Friday night with props Ben Te Kura (foot) and Fletcher Baker (knee) unavailable. Second-rowers Jordan Riki (suspended), Jaiyden Hunt (hand) and Jack Gosiewski (arm) also won’t line up.

But coach Kevin Walters is not panicking and still believes a finals berth is within reach.

“Yeah, definitely,” he said.

“If you have a good look at the table there are a few teams like us behind the leaders and all in the race.

“I expect us to get ourselves together sooner rather than later with some really strong performances leading into the finals.”

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man Caboolture man who allegedly crashed a stolen Ford Ranger into a house on the Sunshine Coast this morning.

The ute, stolen from Wurtulla earlier on Monday, crashed through the front wall of a house at Golden Beach at 5.35am. Another vehicle was damaged in the crash, but the residents escaped unharmed.

Police allege the man had been driving the ute when it crashed and then ran from the scene, before being located in the Pumicestone Passage, swimming towards Pelican Waters.

“The man then climbed into a boat, and then a second boat, where he made threats,” police said.

“Specialist police engaged with the man and arrested him without incident.”

The stretch of the Bruce Highway where three women were killed in a bus crash on the weekend has been likened by a local mayor to a “country road”.

Whitsunday Mayor Ry Collins said that section of the highway could be challenging.

“The challenge is this is the national highway ... if you are to drive the road it doesn’t feel like a highway, it feels like a country road,” Collins told ABC radio.

“There’s no shoulders on the road, it is a fairly open section so I’d imagine the vehicles coming either way would have been able to see each other, but there’s obviously been something happened here where one’s veered into the other’s lane.”

Police have not speculated on the cause of the crash between the Greyhound bus and the 4WD towing a caravan.

“An incident of this nature is very complex. We want to go through the holistic investigation before we really move towards looking at how and why it’s occurred,” Superintendent Graeme Paine told ABC TV.
