New freedoms as NSW vax rate surges

NSW residents are celebrating Freedom Day 2.0 today, after a major vaccine milestone triggered a raft of eased restrictions overnight.

Over the weekend, Premier Dominic Perrottet revealed the state had reached its 80 per cent double dose vaccination target.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, the Premier said it had been “a long wait”, adding “Summer in NSW is looking good”.

The vaccine milestone means fully vaccinated residents can now enjoy a range of new freedoms, including having up to 20 visitors in a home, allowing 50 people to gather outdoors and having 3000 people attend ticketed outdoor events.

Standing while drinking at a hospitality venue is now permitted, dancing is also permitted outdoors - but not at nightclubs - and the customer limit on personal services such as hairdressing has been removed.

There is no caps on weddings and funerals, so long as all guests are fully vaccinated, and face masks will no longer be mandatory in offices.

Date confirmed for Victorian lockdown lift

Victoria’s lockdown will finally be lifted within days, the state’s Premier confirmed.

Daniel Andrews outlined the easing of restrictions on Sunday morning and said they will come into effect on Thursday at midnight with the state expected to hit 70 per cent double-vaccination rate.

“There will be no restrictions on leaving your home or curfew. The road map will be delivered in full and here are a number of things we are adding to the road map as of 11.59pm this Thursday,” he said.

“There will be no travel limit between a within metropolitan Melbourne. Unless you are authorised to enter regional Victoria, you cannot enter regional Victoria at this time. Ten visitors, including dependants, will be able to visit your home per day. We believe that is appropriate. It is, however, highly recommended that only vaccinated people above 12 should be visiting your home.

“Staggered return of grade three and year 11 in metropolitan Melbourne (schools) will commence on Friday 22 October.”

The change comes as Victorians race towards 80 per cent vaccination rate with the target expected to be hit by the end of the month.

At 80 per cent, Victorians would be allowed greater freedoms such as statewide travel, indoor dining, school returns and shops opening.

Mr Andrews said the timing of reopenings depended on the pace at which Victorians are getting vaccinated.

The Department of Health said the state would be able to jump from 70 to 80 per cent double-dosed in less than a week if appointments for second jabs were brought forward.

Victoria to move from lockdowns to lockouts

Premier Daniel Andrews issued a stern warning to those who are still refusing to get vaccinated against Covid.

He started his address to the media on Sunday morning by saying 90 per cent of people in the state’s hospitals were not vaccinated and 97 per cent of those in the intensive care unit had not received the jab.

The hard line stance has been reflected in policy.

“We are moving from lockdowns to lockouts. I‘m not going to let people down to protect people who won’t protect themselves. I encourage people for every good reason, do you want 5 million other Victorians have done and get your first dose and a second dose thereafter,” he said.

He hammered home the point later in his media conference.

“We aren’t locking people down anymore across the board. We are instead locking people out who haven’t got their vaccine,” he said.

“To protect themselves and protect everybody else.”
