Harsh NT borders in place for unvaccinated

Unvaccinated travellers are effectively banned from entering the Northern Territory from today thanks to a new home quarantine program.

There are only a few exemptions for returning residents, essential workers and those who have a legitimate reason they can't take the vaccine.

The home quarantine that begins today will allow people travelling from COVID hotspots who are fully vaccinated to quarantine for seven days at a residence, but they must be in an area with an 80 per cent full vaccination rate.

Travellers will also need to undergo extensive testing before and after arrival. Unvaccinated NT residents travelling will still be able to enter the NT but will have to test and isolate.

It comes as the outbreak in the Territory, which has spread from Darwin and Katherine to Robinson River and Binjari, reaches 35 cases, with three people hospitalised in Darwin.

Northern Territory Health Minister Natasha Fyles insists the local health system will cope and says parts of the hospital can be dedicated to coronavirus patients if admissions increase.

"Some of our wards would become COVID wards. And it would only be if our hospital resources are stretched and again reminding people of that Doherty Institute modelling that shows us we can manage 30 to 100 cases a day without needing to call on further care."
