Teachers in public schools across New South Wales have voted unanimously to go on strike next month.
It's the first time in 10 years such statewide action has been taken.
The Teachers Federation says staff shortages and a decline in wages are behind the one-day stoppage on December 7.
The union will also launch a statewide advertising campaign with TV, radio and print advertisements to draw attention to the shortages.
Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos said the NSW government was refusing to listen to warnings from the education department about "unsustainable" workloads and "uncompetitive" salaries.
"Principals and teachers don't take this decision lightly. Over the course of the last 18 months we have exhausted all options available to us to arrive at a negotiated settlement with the government," he said.
The Teachers Federation says the number of vacant permanent positions in schools has increased by 80 per cent since June.
"The Perrottet government doesn't seem to care that the shortages are so bad that one in five teachers are teaching outside their subject area," Mr Gavrielatos said.
