Residents in the southern Darling Downs town of Inglewood are being ordered to evacuate immediately but not to leave town as floodwaters have risen rapidly.
About 1000 residents are being evacuated from their homes in the southern Darling Downs town of Inglewood east of Goondiwindi after a very quick rise in the Macintyre Brooke.
The warning came from the Goondiwindi Regional Council at 10.30pm Tuesday after the Bureau of Meteorology revised a major flood threat that would likely impact the whole of the town.
Meteorologist Ben Domensino said the river level at Inglewood Bridge rose 8.7m during the 16 hours ending at 2am on Wednesday.
The alert was updated at 5.08am advising that the situation was still rapidly changing.

“A very quick river rise in the Macintyre Brook and revised major flood threat from the Bureau of Meteorology which will likely impact the whole of Inglewood town,” the alert said.
As of 6.45am, about 800 residents have been safely evacuated and the river has peaked, but the emergency declaration remains in place.
The Local Disaster Management Group has told residents to immediately evacuate to the local assembly point at the Inglewood Cemetery on Tobacco Rd, about 2km southwest of Inglewood.
“There are reports of significant rises in the Macintyre Brook system and it is recommended that residents DO NOT attempt to travel out of town,” it said.
Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor Lawrence Springborg told ABC News that the evacuation order was a precautionary measure ahead of more rain expected to fall on the region overnight.
“A fair amount of water is flowing into the nearby Coolmunda Dam, which was already overflowing,” he said
“We’re expecting at least the volume of that dam to pass through it in the next 24 hours.
“We need to doorknock now because it’s very difficult to respond to at night, and we need to take that precaution now.”
It’s recommended residents don’t attempt to travel out of town.
The evacuation centre will have basic facilities but it’s recommended they bring their own food and water, sleeping equipment, medication, spare clothing, important documents, mobile phone and charger and if available, tents and/or caravans are encouraged.
Major flood levels are expected over the next four hours to 2.30am for the Macintyre Brook catchment.
Residents have been warned that properties in the area are likely to experience both internal and external flooding.
BOM experts say that at the Brook’s peak tonight it could reach up to 11.7m high, however it is not likely to exceed that.
The peak should be reached early on Wednesday morning and then ease back over the following 24 hours.
Since 9am on Tuesday, the Inglewood Bridge has seen 59mm while Artunga, just kilometres away, saw 100m in the past 14 hours.
