East coast slapped with multiple flood warnings as wet weather 'expected to worsen' - 9News

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) have issued severe weather and flood warnings for much of southern Queensland and northern NSW, saying conditions are expected to worsen today.

The State Emergency Service (SES) are on high alert today, having already received almost 200 calls for help.

Heavy rain is forecast again today, with warnings of rivers breaking in dangerous flash flooding.

Rainfall totals between 50mm and 100mm are likely in areas of southern Queensland, the BoM said.

Severe thunderstorms may also develop over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt regions, with warnings of potentially destructive winds.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey urged residents to take care, warning flash flooding is notoriously "unpredictable".

"Large proportions of the state (are) in the firing line," he told Today, explaining emergency services have particular concern for Moree, Armadale, Tamworth, and Parkes in NSW.

"We're going to see a combination of flash flooding which can be really unpredictable and come on really quickly but also the Riverina flooding as well.

"Roads will be cut off in many areas, so avoid unnecessary travel in those areas and never drive through floodwaters.

"Time and time again we see poor results with poor decision making with people driving through floodwaters. Often with tragic results.

"Really urging the communities to be aware of their local weather forecast and conditions."

Mr Storey said there are 18 flood watches currently in place in NSW, with more expected throughout the day.

The message is echoed by BoM Hazard Preparedness and Response East Manager Jane Golding.

She has urged residents in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Canberra to be prepared.

"Many areas are expecting significant rainfall, with some places in Queensland and New South Wales likely to see daily rainfall totals of 150 millimetres or more," she said.

"We may see this rainfall over river catchments that are already quite wet as well, so we're encouraging people to 'know your weather, know your risk', and make sure you're staying up to date with the current forecasts and warnings."

SES helicopters have been deployed to the areas of concern on the NSW-Queensland border to make sure they can respond as quickly as possible.

Severe weather and flood warnings are also in effect for parts of South Australia and the southern Northern Territory.

The warnings come after Alice Springs recorded its wettest November day in 20 years yesterday.

The town's airport reported more than 100 millimetres of rain, according to the BoM leading to multiple road closures.

Twenty-four hour rainfall has not been that high since January 30, 2001.

The rain caused the Todd River to burst its banks, sending water cascading down nearby streets.

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services said the man's sedan was "swept off the road" by rising floodwaters."

"The man managed to self-extract from the vehicle and get to a tree where he has stayed until NTES arrived on scene."

The Todd River Schwarz Crescent weather station recorded at least 70mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the city of Rockhampton in central Queensland received more than 300mm overnight and into Wednesday.
