Government backflips after demanding Uluru Voice cartoon be removed - Sky News Australia

A Commonwealth Government agency has apologised after requesting the Herald Sun remove a cartoon depicting Uluru in a piece about the Nationals’ recent rejection of the Voice to Parliament.

The major Melbourne newspaper received a letter from Parks Australia last week ordering it to delete the cartoon by Mark Knight, arguing it breached media guidelines, according to the Herald Sun.

Knight’s sketch depicted Nationals leader David Littleproud outside Parliament House saying “we’re under attack” underneath a hovering Uluru with “Indigenous Voice to Parliament” emblazoned on it.

The letter referenced the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa media guidelines which attempts to ensure the national landmark is appropriately represented in the press.

The guidelines are typically relevant to TV, film and commercial photography and aim to safeguard sensitive and sacred sites from being captured without proper permits.

“These artworks do not have media permits and breach media guidelines,” the letter read.

“To comply with the EPBC Act, media guidelines, ICIP (Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property) laws and show respect for Anangu land and culture, we ask that you remove any artwork breaching these conditions and showing Uluru.”

However, following backlash from the Herald Sun’s weekend editor, Nick Papps, and the engagement of lawyers refusing to remove the cartoon, the government department has backflipped on its demands.

“Staff sent Mr Knight an email about the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa media guidelines which was not appropriate,” Parks Australia said in a statement to SkyNews.com.au.

“It isn’t a request that should have been made and we apologised for the error.”

Knight told the Herald Sun he was shocked by the government’s request and said the cartoon was “sympathetic” to the Voice to Parliament and depicted the iconic landmark in reference to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

“It made me feel like I had done something wrong. I thought it was a very nice image and low and behold, ironically, I was asked to take it down,” he said.
