The mayor of the largest city in the Amazon rainforest said the coronavirus pandemic is killing indigenous people and warned of a "genocide" if Brazil's right-wing government fails to protect vulnerable tribes.

So far 25 indigenous people have died in the rainforest as the outbreak slowly penetrates remote villages, but more than 100 have been killed by the virus in urban areas, health authorities and indigenous groups said.

"I fear a genocide," said Arthur Virgilio Neto, mayor of Manaus, a city of 2 million people and capital of Amazonas state, in a video posted on social media.

The mayor said the government of President Jair Bolsonaro was not concerned about the plight of indigenous people and doing nothing to save lives threatened by the outbreak.

"It is a crime against humanity what they are doing here in my state of Amazonas, in my region." he said.

Brazil's deadliest day

The administration of  Bolsonaro on Wednesday (local time) unveiled new measures to expand use of chloroquine, the predecessor of an anti-malaria drug promoted by US President Donald Trump as a treatment for COVID-19.

The new guidelines were approved by General Eduardo Pazuello, who became interim Health Minister after his predecessor was fired five days ago. Pazuello had no health experience until he became the ministry's number two official in April.

Bolsonaro wrote on his official Facebook page that "there is still no scientific evidence, but it is being monitored and used in Brazil and worldwide."

Health officials say the virus has killed nearly 18,000 Brazilians and infected at least 271,600 people in the South American country.

1,100 deaths were recorded yesterday, making it Brazil's deadliest day for COVID-19.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil's most populous city, authorities announced a six-day "mega-holiday" in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus, after the state's death toll surpassed 5,000 this week.
