Victorian government scrambling to contain coronavirus outbreak in Melbourne's north west - The Age

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said 80 students from Keilor Downs, and a further 20 at Holy Eucharist, were all in isolation.

Six students from Taylors Lakes Secondary College and one St Albans Secondary College student are also in isolation after they attended a VET class with an infected student at Keilor Downs Secondary last Tuesday.

Minister Mikakos urged locals in the Keilor Downs area with even minor symptoms area to come forward for testing as soon as possible, warning of a new cluster taking off.

A new pop-up testing clinic has been established at the Keilor Downs community hub.

“It’s possible there might be community transmission in that area that hasn’t been established to date,” Ms Mikakos told reporters on Sunday.

Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Annaliese van Diemen said genomic testing would reveal if the Keilor Downs outbreak was linked at all to the Cedar Meats outbreak in Brooklyn, but at this stage it was unknown how the family first became unwell.

“We don’t have a clear link to an imported case to another outbreak as such at this point in time,” she said.

Ms Mikakos revealed the largest number of outbreaks had been acquired via social gatherings like weddings, dinners and birthday parties, and warned the public of becoming complacent as restrictions further eased this week.

“Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you must do it,” she said.

The other new cases reported on Sunday were three detected in returned travellers in mandatory hotel quarantine, and one picked up via community testing.

The new cases come as many pubs, restaurants and cafes are set to reopen on Monday, with strict social distance guidelines in place.

Ms Mikakos announced a three week extension to Victoria’s state of emergency to 11:59pm on June 21, stating it would allow the legal enforcement of the new restrictions beginning Monday.

She warned that hospitality venues would be monitored by Victoria Police to ensure they complied with hygiene and density requirements - including recording and logging the details of all patrons.

Those caught breaching the directions face on-the-spot fines of up to $10,000, and $100,000 for more serious and blatant breaches requiring an individual to go to court.

"They are very significant penalties, but we don't want to see people fined," she said.

“These rules are not about making people’s lives difficult, it’s about saving people’s lives".

Currently there are six people still in hospital with coronavirus, including two in intensive care. Victoria's death toll remains at 19, and 1557 people have recovered.
