Gold Coast tower death: Three men charged with murder after teen’s death - NEWS.com.au

The teenager who fell to his death from a Surfers Paradise tower was trying to escape from three men who were allegedly trying to rob him and his friend at knifepoint, police say.

Queensland Police have charged three men with murder after Cian English, 19, fell to his death from View Pacific resort in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man from Hawthorne in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs was found suffering traumatic injuries after what was initially though to be a fall from a balcony.

Overnight Queensland police arrested three men, aged 18, 20 and 22, and charged them all with one count of murder and two counts of armed robbery.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith told reporters today there had been two groups of people staying at the hotel, going “room to room”.

“They’ve had a party where some illicit drugs were taken,” he said.

“During the course of the evening, the three main offenders have robbed the victim and his friend at knifepoint.

“The victim has attempted to escape and gone over the balcony.”

Police were called to the View Avenue apartment complex around 3.15am Saturday after a passer-by discovered the body and called emergency services.

The 18-year-old is due to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday while the other two men are expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Senior Operations Supervisor Neil Stead told reporters on Saturday that when paramedics got to the scene, they were faced with an “extremely difficult job”.

The scenes they witnessed were so traumatic that those tasked with looking after Mr English have undergone welfare checks.

They tried in vain, using CPR, to save him, but it was too late.

A RECURRING PROBLEM ON THE GOLD COAST

Several young people have fallen to their deaths from high-rise balconies in Surfers Paradise in recent years.

In November Liam Kearns, 22, from Christchurch in New Zealand, fell to his death from the 15th floor of the Breakers North building.

In 2018, Sydney-born Hamish Bidgood, 18, fell from a balcony at the Surfers Regent Apartments in Surfers Paradise 5am on November 29.

In 2016, another 17-year-old was injured falling from a balcony as he leaned over to reach for something he dropped.

Another four Schoolies in the same year were fined for balcony hopping.

Isabelle Colman, 17, died after falling from a 26th floor balcony at the Chevron Renaissance towers in 2012 while celebrating Schoolies.

In the month before, three others fell to their deaths from Gold Coast skyscrapers.
