Sydney news: Tributes flow for twins killed in Batlow housefire, teachers' union angered by school return - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Tributes flow for twins

There has been an outpouring of grief for the three-year-old twins who were killed in a house fire at Batlow, in south-west NSW, yesterday.

Aisha and Lailani were pulled from the burning home by firefighters yesterday morning and died at the scene.

Among those mourning the loss was the girls' great grandfather, Wayne Allen, who posted on social media that they had been "tragically taken".

"It's just so hard to believe they've gone," he wrote.

Teachers' union angered by school return

A teachers' union has criticised the NSW Government for announcing a return to full-time schooling next week without consulting it first.

Last night, it was revealed students in public schools across the state will return to campus from Monday, after weeks of remote learning due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Angelo Gavrielatos from the Teachers Federation said some of its members were livid after they learned about the return date through the media.

"They were angry, if social media is anything to go by, they were angry for good reason [and] we expect a bit more respect," he said.

UK Police tip off detectives

A Castle Hill man has been charged with sending explicit material to a child after UK Police engaged with him online while pretending to be a minor.

Police alleged the 27-year-old believed he was a speaking to a 12-year-old girl and told her about sexual acts he wanted her to perform.

UK Police contacted NSW detectives about the man on May 15 and he was charged the next day.

He appeared in court on Sunday and was refused bail.

Petrol price cuts short lived

The price of petrol has risen again, after reaching a four-year record low when Sydney's average fell to below $1 per litre for regular unleaded last month.

It comes as more drivers are expected to return to the road as coronavirus restrictions relax, and the State Government remains keen to limit the number of people on public transport.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury said the price hike was an indication of petrol companies looking to broaden their profit margins, with the gap between the retail price at the bowser and the international wholesale price widening to 18 cents per litre.

"A lot of people saw average prices below $1 and thought, 'finally, we're getting a deal' — the fact is they didn't fall far enough," he said.

Charges over two-year shooting

A man has been charged over two public shootings that took place in Sydney's Inner West just over two years ago.

NSW Police said about 4:15am on March 9, 2018, a man allegedly fired two shots into the rear of a shop on Reiby Lane, Enmore.

The following day, around 1:30am, a station wagon stopped at the same location and allegedly fired five shots from the passenger's side into the shop again.

Authorities arrested a 28-year-old man yesterday and charged him over the shooting.
