No new local COVID-19 cases in Queensland after yesterday's close call - 9News

Queensland has recorded no new COVID-19 cases today, after three were recorded in regional border town of Goondiwindi yesterday.

The state has now fully vaccinated a total of 65 per cent of the eligible population, while 78 per cent have received one dose.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said border restrictions will tighten in response to yesterday's cases for the next seven days.

The new restrictions include no visitors to aged care facilities and hospitals at the weekend, while staff will be required to wear extra PPE.

Border crossing exemptions between Queensland and New South Wales will be "narrowed considerably".

And the NSW town of Moree has been removed from Queensland's border bubble after a growing COVID-19 outbreak there.

Ms Palaszczuk said she hopes Queenslanders "will understand" the need for the new restrictions, while also calling on vaccine uptake.

She said authorities will work to "try and get supplies to those communities in New South Wales rather than having to cross to get supplies into Queensland".

"It's really important to make sure that we ensure the safety of those townships across our Queensland border," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I think people will understand that and it's the right thing."

The premier added that only around 77 per cent of residents at the Gold Coast have received a first dose of the vaccine.

"They need to really lift their game, like honestly," she said.

"The Gold Coast is really close to the border."

"We're seeing what's happening at the moment…exactly the same could happen on the Gold Coast."

Of the cases detected yesterday, one is a contact of a known cluster who is unvaccinated, but authorities say they are "not concerned".

Another is unvaccinated person who was active in the community for five days, while the third person was a woman in her 30s who had been in the community for four days, she been vaccinated with one dose of a vaccine.

There were no immediate plans to lock down Goondiwindi following the infections, health authorities yesterday, as vaccination coverage in the area is stable.

The town has one of the better vaccination rates in Queensland, with well over 90 per cent of eligible residents having had their first dose.

Ms Palaszczuk urged residents of Goondiwindi to get tested if they displayed any symptoms.
