The renewed search for missing boy William Tyrrell could be extended by another few weeks after numerous “setbacks”.
The announcement was made during a brief update on the operational activity being conducted by Strike Force Rosann investigators at Kendall on the NSW mid-north coast.
“The update is that the search continues. It is painstaking, it is difficult, and we are very happy with the progress so far,” Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Bennett told reporters in Sydney.
He said “numerous” items had been seized which would be processed and reported to the coroner.
“We’re very happy with the items we’ve found in terms of their relevance to the investigation, in terms of both eliminating people or proving what happened to William Tyrrell,” he said.
“The investigative team’s message to me is that what they’ve located there and what they’ve done so far, is cause enough to keep going.”
He said he remains “very confident” that the Strike Force would collate a body of information for the coroner to continue the inquest.
“We don’t know what happened to William Tyrrell as we stand here now and we’re trying to find out,” he added.
Friday marks the 12th day of the renewed search for the three-year-old, who disappeared from the garden of his foster grandmother’s home at Kendall shortly before 10.30am on September 12, 2014.
Police have been intensively searching around the home as well as nearby bushland, enduring a week of persistent rain.
On November 15, NSW Police announced they would launch a new “high intensity” search for his remains at three locations near the home after “new evidence” was received.
“This activity is in response to evidence we’ve obtained in the course of the investigation, it’s not speculative in any way,” Mr Bennett said at the time.
“It’s highly likely that if we found something, it would be a body. We are looking for the remains of William Tyrrell, there’s no doubt about that.”
