Western Australia has recorded the highest daily total of 24 new cases, with Omicron in the community and a scare at Fiona Stanley Hospital on Saturday night.

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said hospital attendees are now considered casual contacts and will be tested after a woman and her young child suffering COVID-19 were incorrectly directed to wait in the emergency department instead of being triaged to a COVID-19 area.

Ms Sanderson wouldn’t reveal details of the mother and child “who did everything right”, saying they were directed to go to hospital after the child had vomited and shown signs of growing increasingly ill with the virus.

She said the child was admitted overnight but released in the morning.

“The hospital has strict procedures in place for suspected COVID-19 patients, but unfortunately these were not followed,” she said on Sunday.

“Masks were worn the whole time, but this is being taken extremely seriously and a full review will be undertaken.

“The hospital is also frustrated and there are very robust procedures in place.”

She labelled the risk low to the five families and staff exposed, but unfortunate.

In July last year, two unvaccinated staff members at Fiona Stanley Hospital were sent into 14 days isolation after unwittingly entering a lift shortly after it transported a COVID-infected patient.

The breach was the third time that year that a transfer of patients from ships in WA ports to hospitals resulted in hospital staff having to isolate.

In the meantime, new Omicron clusters are cropping up for the metropolitan area with Ms Sanderson ruling out any mystery cases given all 24 new cases have been linked to existing cases already in hotel quarantine or self-isolation.

Ms Sanderson advised people to check Healthy WA’s list of exposure sites as many more were expected to be added, including in the South West region, and urged people to get tested.

“With these additional cases it is vital that people get tested,” she said.

“Yesterday we undertook 4743 tests across public and private clinics.

“Thank you to all of those who did the right thing and got tested, but these testing numbers are not high enough.

“The better the testing numbers, the more confidence we have that positive cases are accounted for and are in quarantine.

“These are the most important things we can do to limit the spread.”

WA has a total of 1385 cases, of the 90 active cases 24 were in hotel quarantine and 66 were in self-isolating.
