Top cop’s plea to the public after missing girl’s body is found - Sky News Australia

New South Wales Police have called on the public to assist with the murder investigation of a nine-year-old Blue Mountains girl, after her body was found inside a barrel, as authorities revealed the motive behind the act.

New South Wales Police have called on the public to come forward with any information in relation to the murder of a nine-year-old girl whose body was found dumped inside a barrel near a popular river in the Blue Mountains.

Police divers, with the assistance of local officers, the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operational Support Group and the Police Rescue Squad, located the human remains in the vicinity of the Colo River on Tuesday night.

The body, which is yet to be formally identified, was found an hour and a half from Mt Wilson, where the school girl was last seen on Friday January 14.

Investigations by Strike Force Buena led officers to a Sydney unit on Riley Street, Surry Hills, where they arrested a 31-year-old man on Tuesday night at about 8:30pm.

Deputy Commissioner David Hudson urged anyone who either saw or spoke with the child in the past week to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit the website.

"I do urge anyone who has seen the missing 9-year-old, now found deceased, we believe, over the last week or so and prior to that to come forward to police so that we can try and identify reliable sources that can put the young girl in a certain place at a certain time," he said in a police press conference.

A police spokeswoman said officers "welcome any or all information the public is able to provide".

The nine-year-old went missing last Thursday afternoon but it was not reported to police until the early hours of the next morning.

He said investigators "don't speculate" and "nothing is excluded" but they believe it was the body of the missing girl.

"We don't have a motive at this stage. What we have is human remains," Deputy Comm Hudson said.

Deputy Premier Paul Toole thanked the efforts of the NSW Police and those who were part of the mammoth five-day search through dense and mountainous bushland.

Court documents, seen by The Daily Telegraph, say the man allegedly killed the girl between 7pm on January 11 and 10am on January 12 at Mt Wilson.

A post-mortem by the Coroner will determine the cause of death.

How they tracked down alleged killer

NSW Police revealed they became suspicious of the 31-year-old man with a "number of abnormalities" over his movements in the days leading up to the child's disappearance.

A team of more than 200 detectives were assigned to the case where they scoured through hours of CCTV footage and GPS data to find the accused killer and the missing child.

Authorities also intercepted calls between the accused and the girl's mother where they allegedly discussed a plan to buy 20 kilo sandbags from a hardware store to take onto a boat located at a dock in inner Sydney.

"That (plan) was unsuccessful because the boat was inoperable and then tracking that individual back to the location where we commenced the search yesterday afternoon," Deputy Comm Hudson said.

He thanked his team for the "laborious task" of sifting through evidence and the community in coming forward with information.

The mother is currently under health care and has been "difficult to approach and contact" but police hope to speak with her once doctor's give her the all clear.

The grandparents, who have custody of the child, have been informed of the discovery.

"Our thoughts go out to them and all the other remaining family members," the Deputy Comm said.

The alleged killer sought advice from his legal team and refused or declined to speak with detectives.
