Two locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 have been detected in WA, and a further 12 infections have been linked to international and interstate travellers.
The two local cases diagnosed in the 24 hours to 8pm on Monday night were linked to the Cockburn cluster, with contact tracers working to determine potential exposure sites.
It brings the number of active cases in WA to 109. Of these, 32 are in hotel quarantine, 77 are in self-quarantine and one is in hospital, but is not requiring treatment in intensive care.
The current Omicron outbreak, which has mostly centred on the Cockburn area, was triggered when a woman caught the virus from her daughter, who had recently returned from Tasmania.
The more contagious Omicron will soon replace Delta as the most detected variant in WA. So far, 120 cases of the Omicron strain have been recorded, compared to 137 cases of Delta.
WA Health said it was particularly concerned about people who attended Comfort Massage in Osborne Park (January 13), Applecross’ U Natural Spa Therapy (January 7 to 14) and New U Massage in Mount Lawley (January 13 and 14).
“These locations have been visited by multiple COVID-19 cases and WA Health believes additional people have attended the businesses during this time, without registering their attendance or using the SafeWA app,” the department said.
At 12noon on Tuesday, only one additional exposure site had been listed: Priceline Pharmacy at Kwinana Marketplace Shopping Centre, between 11.30am and 11.45am on Thursday, January 13.
Anyone who visited the pharmacy at that time was asked to get tested if symptoms develop. Metropolitan public testing clinics are open until 10.00pm.
After just 3728 West Australians came forward for testing on Sunday, that figure more than doubled to 8,416 tests on Monday following a plea from Mark McGowan for anyone that feels even “slight symptoms” to get swabbed immediately.
“We expect there are more cases in the community and we need to track them down,” the Premier said. “Please, even if you feel slight symptoms – do not ignore the signs and get tested today.”
Four of the new exposure sites revealed on Monday were in the Margaret River region on January 13 including the town’s visitor centre, IGA, Coles and Mammoth Cave, prompting the indoor mask mandate to be extended to the South West.
RAC Karri Valley was also an exposure site between January 12 and 14.
The number of COVID positive seafarers on board chemical and oil tanker British Chief – currently berthed off the coast of Port Hedland – grew from five to seven on Monday.
All positive crew members on board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored.
On Monday, 1,915,363 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app, which represented a 28.8 per cent increase in usage from the previous day.
