Victoria records 11,240 COVID-19 cases and 36 deaths - The Age

Victoria recorded 11,240 COVID-19 cases and 36 deaths on Friday, as the Deputy Prime Minister defended the government’s handling of fatal virus outbreaks in aged care facilities.

There are now 707 people in hospital with the virus in Victoria, with 29 on ventilators and 79 in intensive care.

Of the new cases reported in Victoria on Friday, 3889 were confirmed by PCR tests, while 7351 were self-reported from rapid antigen tests.

More than 24,700 PCR tests results were returned Thursday. Victoria now has 65,986 active cases.

Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said on Thursday that coronavirus deaths among elderly Australians and aged care residents would continue to rise in the coming weeks.

“There will be more deaths in Australia,” Professor Kelly told reporters on Thursday. “I do expect deaths in aged care and elsewhere in the community over the next few weeks.”

There have been 777 aged care residents who have died with COVID-19 since July last year.

In response to the significant aged care deaths, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce told ABC News Breakfast on Friday the government was “always working out how you can do a better job and create a better outcome”.

“We’ve had tragic deaths, but thank God you live in Australia and not in the UK or in so many other nations. Because we’ve done an exceptional job [at keeping people alive] and the government has done an exceptional job,” he said.

The federal Health Department is setting up a taskforce to gather more information on COVID-19-related deaths and preparing to supply aged care facilities with oral treatments for coronavirus in preparation for the next major outbreak.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese called for Aged Care Minister Richard Colbeck’s resignation on Thursday.

About 93 per cent of Victorians have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 42 per cent of the population aged over 18 have received a booster dose. There were 15,382 inoculations administered at state-run sites on Thursday.
