‘We tried to save him’: Man dies after being crushed by truck tailgate - The Age

A 41-year-old worker died after he became trapped under a truck at an industrial estate in Melbourne’s north on Saturday afternoon, despite desperate attempts from bystanders to free him.

Emergency services were called to Merola Way in Campbellfield just before 12.30 pm, but the Epping man died at the scene.

“I went there to have a look at my workshop and I saw 20 police cars and reporters and ambulances,” said Omid Altamimi, 42, who runs a mechanic business next door.

“I was shocked,” he said. “He was our neighbour and every day we said ‘hi’ to each other – he was a very gentle man and so kind and helpful.

“He was a very good person, and I’m sorry that happened.”

Nine News reported the man became pinned under the tailgate of a truck. Bystanders nearby heard calls for help and rushed to his aide, even attempting to use a forklift to move the tailgate off him.

One witness told Nine News that another person at the scene said he had heard someone keep calling “help, help, help”.

“We tried to save him,” he said.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner and WorkSafe has commenced an investigation.

As of last week, Victoria recorded 44 workplace deaths this year. In 2021, there were 66 workplace deaths in the state.
