Three teens charged after up to nine shots fired in Queensland town, sparking lockdown - 9News

Police are working to determine why three teenagers allegedly fired up to nine shots into the street, continuing while police were on scene, in the Queensland town of Tara yesterday afternoon.

Acting Superintendent Ray Vine has this morning said "the conduct is extremely concerning", with "shots discharged in the vicinity of police".

It is not believed the police were "actively" targeted.

He said police were called to shots fired on Smallacombe Street around 3.30pm (4.30pm AEDT), where they arrived to find a car with two bullet holes.

Police then heard further gunshots, took cover, and called for more police.

"We have several vehicles attend Tara, also police from surrounding areas," he said.

Police cordoned off an area, including Surat Development Road, Day Street, Benn Street, Fry Street and Milne Street, before a bullet hole was found in another car.

An emergency declaration was declared and residents were told to stay inside their homes for hours.

A third car was also then found shot at just outside the cordoned-off area.

Vine said police then identified a house on Day Street where it is believed the shots were coming from, finding a .22 calibre rifle in the ceiling and a number of used cartridges.

About 10.45pm, police found four boys, aged 14, 15, 16 and 16, outside the exclusion zone and took them into custody.

He said two of them had declined to be interviewed.

The four boys, of which two are brothers, were all known to police, but none of them were on bail.

Vine said the two 16-year-olds had since been charged with seven offences each, four weapons offences and three counts of willful damage.

"A 14-year-old boy was dealt with the same offences by the provisions of the youth justice act and cautioned," he said.

He said the 15-year-old boy was released without charge.

Police are still trying to identify the motive behind the shooting.

"This is an isolated incident," he said.

The emergency declaration was lifted about 11.30pm (12.30am Thursday AEDT).

Alan Dare, who lived at a neighbouring property, was also slain in the shoot-out.

McCrow and Arnold were stationed in Tara when they were murdered in the shooting.
