A man has been arrested after two children were killed and a three pedestrians injured, after being struck by a vehicle yesterday.
About 4.30pm Tuesday, emergency services were called to Warne Street at Wellington, NSW, following reports five pedestrians had been struck by a car.
Police said a 34-year-old woman and four young boys aged six, seven, nine and 10, were walking along the grass on the side of the road when they were struck.
They were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however, the two boys aged six and seven died a short time later.
The woman was flown to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. The 10-year-old boy sustained serious leg injuries and was flown to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and is undergoing surgery. The nine-year-old boy sustained minor injuries and was taken to Orange Base Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle allegedly left the scene prior to police arrival.
Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.
Following inquiries, a 25-year-old man was arrested near Elizabeth Street, Wellington just after 8.40pm last night following a short foot pursuit.
The man was taken to Dubbo Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing before being taken to Dubbo Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries.
