Trainer Leslie Kenyon and another registered person have been suspended after a targeted inspection on a property in Lara, just outside of Melbourne, allegedly found evidence relating to luring and baiting offences.
Live baiting is illegal and typically involves attaching live animals such as rabbits or possums to mechanical lure for greyhounds to chase, catch, and maim.
Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) chief executive Stuart Laing said the industry had "zero tolerance" for any baiting offences.
"I would like to acknowledge the work of GRV's Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit, which has led to the identification of these breaches, and the swift action that has been taken," Laing said of the allegations.
"Our Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit is highly vigilant and will investigate allegations and evidence and take appropriate action, including consideration of any potential criminal breaches of Victoria's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 as well as offences under the Rules of Racing."
While speaking to media today, government minister Gabrielle Williams did not comment on whether the government would commit to an inquiry into the sport, but she said the industry was broken.
"Live baiting is unacceptable," she told media.
"We have sent a very clear message about that through the investments we have made."
Lara trainer Robert Britton said he was disappointed by the allegations, but was adamant live baiting was not widespread in the industry.
"Most participants are pretty annoyed," he said.
"The industry has worked so hard to clean up its act. Live baiting basically doesn't occur other than right at the edges in the dark alleys."
The kennels in Lara are rented by several trainers including Kenyon. 9News is not suggesting any other trainers at the kennel are suspected of live baiting - only that Kenyon has been suspended while the allegations against him are investigated
Kenyon refused to speak publicly when asked for comment.
