Initial indications suggest speed was a factor in an alleged hit and run that killed a 43-year-old woman north of the Sunshine Coast overnight, police have said.
Police allege a silver Ford Falcon was driving east on Boundary Road in the Hervey Bay suburb of Urangan about 12am today when it hit a woman walking home from a social event.
Emergency services arrived to find a "severely horrific scene", Senior Constable Matt Swan told media this morning.
He said the woman was declared dead at the scene, with the Ford located by police a short time later.
"Speed, matter of driving, driving behaviour, as well as drugs and alcohol is all forming part of the investigation," Swan said.
"The information that we've gathered at this time is the speeds were travelling well in excess of the sign-posted speed limit for that roadway.
"The exact speed is unknown however we do have information that indicates the speed was well and truly above not just the capability of the driver, but the capability of anyone's driving ability and skill set.
Swan said the speed limit along that road is 60km/h.
A 41-year-old man, who is not believed to be known to the woman, is being questioned by police.
No charges have been laid.
Boundary Road, between Stringbark Street and Booral Road are currently closed while police investigations are ongoing.
