Federal politics live: Anthony Albanese meets China's Premier Li Qiang in high-level visit - ABC News

(ABC News)

China will be looking to Australia's support in its bid to join the trans-Pacific free trade pact, Griffith Asia Institute director Caitlin Byrne says.

Beijing has been lobbying to join the 11-member Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTTP).

But the pact's members are split over the application.

Professor Bryne told ABC News that it's likely Premier Li Qiang will lobby the PM for his support, as well as reiterating its objection to the AUKUS pact.

"So, there are going to be positives and negatives from both sides," she said.

For Australia, it is about continuing to stabilise the relationship.

"Australian rhetoric has been fairly cautious leading into this visit, noting … that there are still disagreements on the table," she said.

"Disagreements about detained Australian citizens, Yang Hengjun for example, is one of those.

"But as well, wanting to see the trade relationship fully restored."
