Coronavirus infections in NSW have continued to decline, with just one new case recorded despite more than 5,000 people being tested yesterday.

Last week there were 26 new COVID-19 cases in NSW — the lowest number recorded since the pandemic began.

Record numbers of people were tested in NSW last week, and more than 300,000 people have been swabbed for the virus in Australia's worst-affected state.

The dwindling number of new cases being found comes as school students in NSW begin a phased return to face-to-face teaching from today.

While many children will be on campus for just one day this week, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said Year 12 students would return for an average of between three and four days.

Many schools have prioritised their Year 12s in the return, in a bid to help them get back on track after HSC preparations were disrupted by coronavirus.

This Friday, NSW's social-distancing shutdown will be eased slightly.

Gatherings of 10 people will be allowed outdoors, while households will be able to accept five visitors.

Up to 10 people will be able to dine in at cafes and restaurants at a time.

Ms Berejiklian said she wanted to see between 8,000 and 10,000 daily tests as people got more freedom.

Last Friday the state hit a record-high of 13,696 tests.

"As we ease restrictions, we need that level of confidence that enough people are coming forward and getting tested," Ms Berejiklian said.

From Friday, weddings will be allowed to have up to 10 guests, while funerals can accommodate up to 20 mourners indoors and 30 outdoors.

Outdoor gyms and playgrounds will open, as will outdoor pools, with restrictions.

However, unlike other states, in NSW regional travel will not be permitted.
