NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says states must lift travel restrictions as coronavirus cases stay low - ABC News

The Premier of Australia's worst-affected coronavirus state says she opposes her counterparts' border closures and wants travel restrictions scrapped.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she was "very open" about her stance against border shutdowns in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia but conceded it was a "matter for them".

"I'd probably feel offended if they told me how to do my job," she said.

"[But] I often joke with the Queensland Premier that I'll end up going to Auckland before I go to Brisbane if we continue the way we are going."

NSW Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres told News Corp: "I cannot see a reason why other states would not road-map to the 1st of July as a logical starting point for where all of those border restrictions could be removed and allow people to start moving across the country."

Ms Berejiklian said she hoped if NSW continued to demonstrate strong infection control other states would be comfortable easing border restrictions.

Since the pandemic began, Australia has recorded about 7,000 coronavirus cases, more than 3,000 of which are in NSW.

Health authorities in Australia's most populous state confirmed another four new infections in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday.

One of the cases was a staff member at Werrington Public School, which has been closed for cleaning.

More than 9,700 people were swabbed for COVID-19 in NSW yesterday.

Ms Berejiklian said this rate of testing needed to be sustained, especially this weekend, when NSW will see its first significant lift of restrictions.

Here's how new cases and testing has tracked over the past seven days:

DayNew COVID-19 cases in NSWTests
Thursday 7/549,461
Friday 8/5513,692
Saturday 9/529,515
Sunday 10/515,258
Monday 11/506,048
Tuesday 12/568,117
Wednesday 13/549,747

From tomorrow, restaurants and cafes as well as pubs and clubs with dining areas will be permitted to reopen and serve a maximum of 10 patrons at at time.

Ms Berejiklian conceded she was concerned about the prospect of people descending on shops and eateries.

"People have been asking me the last few days, 'are you worried about what Friday and beyond might look like?' Of course we are. Of course I am," she said.

The Premier insisted people call ahead to make bookings and refrain from lining up outside venues.

"The last thing you want is to get the disease or spread the disease as you're waiting in a queue for a service or to purchase something," she said.

"Just be mindful of crowds, be mindful of what you're doing. Don't touch surfaces unless you absolutely have to."
