Coronavirus Australia live news: South Australia restrictions eased again - ABC News

Concern for South Australian pizza bar worker whose lie triggered lockdown

An anti-racism activist says it's not surprising a pizza worker, whose lie triggered South Australia's lockdown, felt they needed to hide the truth given the restrictions placed on international students.

It's emerged the pizza bar worker accused of lying to health authorities is a 36-year-old man who is lawfully in Australia on a temporary graduate visa.

Police say the Spanish national was also employed in a medi-hotel kitchen and allegedly lied to contact tracers that he also worked at the pizza bar where staff had contracted COVID-19, instead telling authorities he had ordered a pizza and later tested positive to the virus.

Anti-racism activist Neha Madhok says its understandable people are upset but the community should cut the 36-year-old some slack.

"I'm really concerned for this person mental health, I'm concerned for this person's physical wellbeing, I'm concerned that we're going to talk about this as an isolated individual case instead of looking at the broader system that's led to this person behaving in this way," she said.
