No home quarantine under Australia's revamped hotel quarantine system
Premier Daniel Andrews says there will be no home quarantine in Victoria’s revamped hotel quarantine system, meaning the State Government won’t be implementing a key recommendation from the Coate inquiry.
Victoria’s hotel quarantine inquiry, led by former judge Jennifer Coate, was tasked with investigating what went wrong in the state’s program and is set to deliver its final report next month.
But Mr Andrews said Victoria’s reset program would be a hotel-based system, because implementing home quarantine would require a national approach.
“There is not a view at the National Cabinet that home quarantine is an appropriate response to the risk that we face at the moment,” he said.
Victoria’s hotel quarantine program is set to restart on December 7, when the state starts receiving international passengers for the first time since early July.
The full details of the finalised program are yet to be released, but Mr Andrews today said the Government had also looked at requiring people to get tested for coronavirus before they fly home — another measure that would need National Cabinet approval.
"Whilst we treat every returned traveller as a potential positive … if we know that certain people have the virus then we can take better care of them and better manage the risk to public health,” he said.
"I look forward to that being on the agenda when we have our National Cabinet meeting and our COAG meeting up in Canberra in just a little over a week."
The Coate Inquiry will hold its final hearing tomorrow, to tender final evidence and submissions.
