A maritime worker is among two people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Western Australia overnight.
The WA Health Department said the two men, one aged in his 50s and the other in his 60s, had recently been overseas and were in hotel quarantine.
“One is a maritime worker who flew in to join a vessel,” the WA Health Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
The diagnoses bring WA’s total number of confirmed cases to 778, including 12 active cases.
Meanwhile, Premier Mark McGowan said he was “excited by the news” that a large and reputable pharmaceutical company was a step closer to having a vaccine ready.
“We’re very hopeful of a vaccine by the first quarter of next year,” he told reporters.
“Before a vaccine is widely available, we need to continue to be very, very cautious about borders, about measures we put in place, about making sure we keep all of ourselves — our state and our country — safe.”
Mr McGowan said in the meantime, WA’s controlled interstate border that comes into effect this weekend was a “pretty strong safety measure” and unprecedented — aside from the hard border — for 100 years.
“Victoria’s had no cases for 10 days, NSW no cases for three or four days,” he said.
“The biggest threat is people returning from overseas (and) maritime crew.”
Under the controlled interstate border, arrivals from Victoria and NSW will have to quarantine for two weeks but people from other jurisdictions will be able to travel relatively more freely.
