Barnaby Joyce ‘not really’ sad about being replaced as National Party leader

By Pallavi Singhal

Outgoing National Party leader Barnaby Joyce has released a statement saying he is not sad about the party’s decision to elect David Littleproud as its new leader.

“Well I suppose you think I’m sad. Not really,” Joyce said in a video posted online.

“I gave every ounce of my energy to make sure I looked after the people of regional Australia, the people in the small family businesses, the people in the weatherboard and iron, the people on the farms, making sure that we drove the investments to hopefully take their standard of living ahead.”

Joyce also congratulated Littleproud, newly elected deputy leader Perin Davey and re-elected Senate leader Bridget McKenzie.

“They have a mighty task ahead of them and I will give them all the support I can.

“Now, I have a chance to get back to my second greatest love, after my family, and that is my beloved people of New England, where I will have more time to get around my electorate and to be a person of service to them.”

Ahead of the leadership vote, Joyce said he was “sanguine” about being challenged for the position.

“I will let the party room make up its own mind about it. It’s incredibly important. It’s a democracy,” he said.

Glyn Davis named new secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet

By Katina Curtis

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has appointed former university vice-chancellor Glyn Davis to lead his department.

Davis has most recently been chief executive of the Paul Ramsay Foundation and previously led Griffith University and the University of Melbourne. He also headed up Queensland’s Department of Premier and Cabinet from 1998 to 2002.

“Professor Davis will bring to the role of secretary a deep understanding of public policy and will work with my government in bringing about positive change for the Australian people,” Albanese said.

The previous secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Phil Gaetjens, stepped down after the election. He was previously Scott Morrison’s chief of staff and Labor had criticised his appointment to the top job in the public service as politicising the role.

The major news so far today

By Pallavi Singhal

Good afternoon. I’m Pallavi Singhal and I’m taking over the blog from Broede Carmody for the rest of the day. For anyone just joining us, here’s what you’ve missed so far:

  • Peter Dutton has been elected unopposed as the new leader of the Liberal Party and Sussan Ley has been elected deputy leader.

  • David Littleproud has been elected as the new leader of the Nationals and Perin Davey as deputy leader. Littleproud was previously the party’s deputy leader under Barnaby Joyce.

  • Since being elected, Dutton has admitted he made a mistake by not attending the 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations and defended his image, saying “it’s pretty hard to break into a smile” when you’re announcing the deportation of thousands of criminals.
  • Meanwhile, the Liberal’s new deputy leader Sussan Ley has told women the party is “determined to earn back your trust and your faith”.

‘We hear you’: Sussan Ley to disaffected Liberal women

By Broede Carmody

The new deputy Liberal leader, Sussan Ley, has indicated that her party will review its policies regarding women.

As regular readers of this blog will know, the Liberals lost several inner-city seats to socially progressive female independents at the recent election.

“I will continue to be a strong voice for women,” Ley said.

“We know that we didn’t receive the support of all women at the last election, and my message to the women of Australia is ‘we hear you. We’re listening. We’re talking. And we are determined to earn back your trust and your faith’.”

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has defended his image as a tough-talking politician.

“[As home affairs minister] I was ultimately able to cancel the visas of ... just over 6000 criminals,” he said during today’s press conference.

“People who had committed sexual offences against women and children, committed murder, serious criminal acts, and [I then had] to deport them from our country. It’s pretty hard to break into a smile when you are making that announcement.”

I made a mistake in boycotting Stolen Generations apology, Dutton says

To policy specifics now, and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has been asked if he will support the Uluru Statement of the Heart given he’s talked up Australia’s Indigenous history.

During his response, the Liberal leader admitted he made a mistake by not attending the 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations.

I made a mistake in relation to the apology and largely that was because of my own background and experience. Many of you have lived out in regional areas and many of you haven’t. I worked in Townsville [as a police officer]. I remember going to many domestic violence incidents, particularly involving Indigenous communities, and, for me at the time, I believed that the apology should be given when the problems were resolved. And the problems are not resolved. There are little boys and girls in parts of our country in 2022, in this year, that slept in a shipping container last night to get through the hours of darkness in Indigenous communities and it’s completely unacceptable.

Earlier, new Nationals leader David Littleproud was asked whether his party would now support an Indigenous Voice to parliament given he was talking up diversity and the “sensible centre”.

Littleproud said new Northern Territory senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price would be front-and-centre in those discussions.

As for the question of a national integrity commission, Dutton had this to say:

I welcome the scrutiny, I think it’s a good thing. The nuance in the detail, we will be able to work through that and I’m keen to engage with [crossbencher] Helen Haines, for whom I have a great deal of respect.

Peter Dutton suggests Liberals will target ‘forgotten Australians in the suburbs’

By Broede Carmody

He suggests his party develop policies in the coming years to help what he describes as the “forgotten Australians in the suburbs”.

Here’s what else he had to say:

I want our country to support aspiration and reward hard work, [and] take proper care of those Australians who, short term or long term, can’t take care of themselves. We have a rich and proud Indigenous heritage and a migrant story the envy of the world. We’re aligned with countries of similar values. We always have been and that alliance as we know is more important than ever.

Our strength to the Australian people is [that we are] the best party to keep our country safe and our economy strong so we can afford to pay for our essential services. By the time of the next election in 2025, we will have presented a plan to the Australian people which will clean up Labor’s inevitable mess and lay out our own vision.

We won’t be Labor light. We’ll propose strong policy to make the lives of Australians [easier] and provide more security to them. Our policies will be squarely aimed at the forgotten Australians in the suburbs across Australia.

Under my leadership, the Liberal Party will be true to our values - values that have seen us win successive elections over the course of the last quarter of a century.

Make no mistake ... the next three years under Labor is going to be tough for the Australian people.

David Littleproud indicates Nationals will aim for ‘sensible centre’

By Broede Carmody

David Littleproud says his appointment to the Nationals leadership isn’t about “lurching” to the left or the right.

This is not about the National Party lurching left or lurching right, it’s using common sense and being in the sensible centre. That’s where you win elections, not chasing extremities.

The National Party proved that when we signed up to net zero by 2050. If we didn’t sign up to that - capital markets had already factored in nearly up to a 3 per cent increase in your mortgages. I couldn’t look my people in the eye and say we can’t be part of a global community. We’re a nation of 26 million people who make enough food for 308 million.

What we bring to Canberra is common sense and equity.

New Nationals leader vows to ensure regional Australia isn’t forgotten

By Broede Carmody

The new Nationals leader, David Littleproud, has addressed the media.

He said today is the proudest day of his life and he will ensure regional Australia isn’t forgotten in the parliament.

I believe passionately in the National Party because we are all there is about regional and rural Australia. We are the conscience of rural and regional Australia right here in this parliament. This is the proudest day of my professional life.

The National Party today starts its journey towards 2025, with a vibrant team, ready to articulate the policies that are important to regional and rural Australia. But also to draw on the experience of two former deputy prime ministers in Barnaby Joyce and Michael McCormack. To build that bridge of unity and purpose, to make sure that regional and rural Australia isn’t forgotten here.
