Nine Political Editor Chris Uhlmann says Prime Minister Scott Morrison needed to convincingly win his clash with Anthony Albanese last night – but didn't.
"Last night was an important night as pre-polling starts today," Uhlmann said.
"Clearly the government is coming from behind. Scott Morrison needed to defeat Anthony Albanese and do it well last night. That didn't happen."
Uhlmann's verdict was that a hung Parliament was most likely on the current polling numbers, with the Coalition's primary vote having "collapsed" to 35 per cent, compared to Labor on 38 per cent.
The problem for both parties? The leaders.
"It's not a great choice. That is the issue they've got," Uhlmann said.
"In the absence of there being any excitement about the two leaders what we are seeing in the inner city seats are the teal Independents, the Independents taking on the moderate Liberals, and so the excitement that they're generating really is bothering the Liberal Party.
"It's sucking a lot of resources out of other fights into seats that should be safe."
