A severe heatwave threatens Australia this weekend with temperatures hitting 30 degrees in most major cities.
The Bureau of Mereology forecasted that a heatwave would hit southern parts of the country the worst with warnings in place for Western Australia and South Australia.
Meanwhile, a low intensity heatwave warning is in place for Sydney.
Temperatures in Sydney will top 37 degrees on Saturday with a chance of severe thunderstorms and fires in the late afternoon.
“There’s not too much in the way of rain expected with these storms, particularly inland (NSW) and this is increasing the risk of grass fires,” Sky News Meteorologist Alison Osborne said.
“We’re keeping a close eye on fire weather.”
A brief cool change on Sunday will drop the mercury in Sydney to 27 degrees.
Adelaide will cook through 27 degrees on Saturday and 30 degrees on Sunday ahead of a severe to extreme heatwave warning in place for next week where temperatures soar to 40 degrees.
In Melbourne, there will be temperatures of 23 degrees on Saturday and 27 degrees on Sunday.
Brisbane will feel 31 degrees throughout the weekend while Darwin also has consistent temperatures of 33 degrees across Saturday and Sunday.
The mercury in Perth will hit 34 on Saturday and 33 degrees on Sunday with most parts of the state under a heatwave warning.
An active monsoon will continue to thrash northern regions of WA, the Northern Territory and Queensland this weekend.
Widespread torrential downpour with bring rainfall totals up to 100mm across the regions this weekend, with flood watches and warnings in place for parts of Gulf Country and the Peninsula.
The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there will be no tsunami threat to northern parts of the country after Darwin felt a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in Indonesia.
