Thousands of homes left without power after thunderstorms barrel across New South Wales - 9News

Around 30,000 people have been left without power across parts of New South Wales following ferocious thunderstorms on Saturday evening.

Ausgrid announced they have crews working through the night to restore connections across parts of the state - from Newcastle down to Sydney.

"Storms continue to hit our network tonight & 30,000 customers in Newcastle, Hunter, Central Coast & Sydney are without power," they tweeted.

"We apologise for the inconvenience. Crews are working through the night to restore the power as soon as it is safe to do so."

The NorthConnex Tunnel was closed in both directions from Wahroonga to West Pennant Hills due to a power failure, between the M2 Motorway and the M1 Pacific Motorway.

Motorists were advised to use Pennant Hills Road instead but warned that a number of traffic lights were blacked out across the area.

The strong winds brought down more than powerlines, with fallen trees disrupting travel and roofs ripped off homes, schools and businesses.

A tree on the tracks at Pymble, in the city's Upper North Shore, meant there were no trains running on the T1 North Shore Line from Gordon to Hornsby.

There were also no trains running on the T9 Northern Line from Hornsby to Epping, due to a fallen tree at Thornleigh.

"Buses are being organised, to replace services on the T1 North Shore Line & the T9 Northern Line but are not onsite," passengers were advised by the Transport Management Centre.

The strong winds also damaged the temporary structures around Barangaroo where the SailGP is being held.

As a result of the dangerous weather and damage sustained, the second day of the event has been cancelled by organisers.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued earlier in the evening by the Bureau of Meteorology has since been cancelled.
