Bruce Lehrmann named as accused in Qld rape case

Bruce Lehrmann can be revealed as the high-profile man accused of rape in Toowoomba.

The former Coalition staffer on Thursday lost a court battle to suppress his identity, after his lawyers raised concerns about him hurting himself if named.

Queensland Supreme Court judge Peter Applegarth on Thursday afternoon said Lehrmann, charged with two counts of alleged rape in Toowoomba in October 2021, had failed in attempts to argue a magistrate in a lower court had erred in refusing an earlier suppression application.

Lehrmann’s lawyers had argued he has been suffering mental health issues and could suffer catastrophic health risks if named, and the magistrate had erred.

“The evidence before the magistrate included evidence that the potential naming of the applicant prior to the conclusion of the committal proceeding weighed heavily on him and had affected his mental health,” Justice Applegarth said.

“This unfortunate effect on his mental health permitted, but did not compel, a finding that a non-publication order was necessary to protect the applicant’s safety.”

Lehrmann has yet to enter a plea.

Detectives say it’s possible elite Sydney school coach took his own life after woman found dead

A manhunt continues after a young female staff member was found dead in the gymnasium at a private school in Sydney’s city centre.

Police said they were looking for a male employee from St Andrew’s Cathedral School after the woman in her early 20s was discovered with serious head injuries inside the gym toilets just before midnight on Wednesday.

The woman has been identified as Lilie James, a 21-year-old water polo coach at the school. A crime scene was also set up near a coastal reserve at Vaucluse, in the eastern suburbs, where investigators found items linked to the killing. Police want to speak to 24-year-old Paul Thijssen in relation to the matter.

Mr Thijssen graduated from the school in 2017 and has since worked there as an assistant sports coach, according to his Linkedin profile.

Police helicopters and boats were patrolling the coastline off South Head on Thursday morning and Supt Fileman said detectives had been looking into the possibility the man had taken his own life.

Israel releases video of overnight raids in Gaza

Israeli ground forces operated within the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, attacking multiple Hamas targets before withdrawing, the military said in a statement on what Israel’s Army Radio described as the biggest incursion of the current war.

Video of the overnight action issued by the military showed armoured vehicles proceeding through a sandy border zone. A bulldozer is seen levelling part of a raised bank, tanks fire shells, and explosions are seen near or amid a row of damaged buildings.

The military statement posted online said the incursion was carried out “in preparation for the next stages of combat”, a possible reference to the large-scale invasion that Israeli leaders have threatened as part of the war to destroy Hamas.

“The soldiers have since exited the area and returned to Israeli territory,” the military statement added.

China’s foreign minister in US to pave way for Biden-Xi summit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi begins a long-anticipated visit to Washington on Thursday (Friday AEDT), as the US and China seek to manage deep strategic differences and pave the way for an expected summit between presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.

The Middle East war has added a fresh dynamic to the testy relationship between the superpowers and Washington is hoping Beijing could use its influence with Iran to help ensure the Israel-Hamas conflict does not spread to the wider region.

However, while both Beijing and Washington have spoken of looking for areas where they can work together, and Xi on Wednesday said China was willing to cooperate on global challenges, experts do not expect immediate progress.

The Biden administration’s priority with Beijing has been to prevent intense competition between the world’s two largest economies and disagreements on a host of issues from trade to Taiwan and the South China Sea veering into conflict.

Israel army reports ‘relatively large’ overnight raid, war death toll tops 8000

Israeli ground forces carried out a relatively large incursion into the Gaza Strip overnight to attack Hamas positions, Israel’s Army Radio reported on Thursday.

It described the raid as larger than previously carried out during the Gaza war, now in its third week.

The war, in its 19th day, is the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides. The Hamas-run Health Ministry said on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) that 6546 Palestinians had been killed and 17,439 others wounded. In the occupied West Bank, more than 100 Palestinians have been killed and 1650 wounded in violence and Israeli raids since October 7.

More than 1400 people in Israel have been killed, according to Israeli officials, mostly civilians who died in the initial Hamas rampage. Israel’s military has raised the number of remaining hostages in Gaza to 222 people, including foreigners believed captured by Hamas during the incursion. Four hostages have been released.

Court hears arguments about identifying high-profile man accused of rape

Liam Walsh

The battle to identify a high-profile man accused of rape in Toowoomba has heard court arguments about whether a magistrate erred in refusing a suppression application.

The accused man had been charged on two alleged counts of rape in Toowoomba in October 2021, with the matter currently before the Magistrates Court.

But on Thursday, the fight over identifying him spilt into the Queensland Supreme Court before Justice Peter Applegarth.

Queensland laws had prevented the media from identifying people accused of sex offences until they were committed to stand trial.

But state parliament, acting on a recommendation from the government’s Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce, passed amendments this month to bring Queensland into line with other states.

Under the new laws, defendants could apply for a non-publication order with three days’ notice. The media would be notified during this time and given the right to argue in court against a suppression.

But the accused’s application for a suppression order had been rejected by a Toowoomba magistrate this month.

That had prompted the man’s lawyers to challenge that rejection in Queensland’s Supreme Court. Part of their argument in seeking the suppression order was about the possibility of the man engaging in self-harm.

Justice Applegarth has reserved his decision for later this afternoon.

Firearms instructor treated at mental health facility

The man identified as a person of interest in a mass killing in the US state of Maine is a firearms instructor trained by the military and was recently committed to a mental health facility, according to a state police bulletin.

The police intelligence bulletin, reviewed by The Associated Press, was being circulated to law enforcement officials on Thursday (AEDT) after the shootings that left at least 22 people dead.

The bulletin says the man, Robert Card, had been trained as a firearms instructor at a US Army Reserve training facility in Maine. The document says Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the northern summer. It did not provide specific details about his treatment or condition.

The shootings at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston killed at least 22 people and engulfed the state’s second-largest city in chaos.

The suspect remained at large as authorities ordered residents and business owners to stay inside and off the streets.

Palaszczuk affirms backing for $5b CopperString project

Mark Ludlow

The Palaszczuk government says it is still committed to the $5 billion CopperString transmission line from Townsville to Mount Isa despite Glencore announcing it will close copper mines in the region within two years.

The mine closure decision cast doubt on the Swiss mining giant’s other operations in north-west Queensland, including its copper smelter and zinc assets, although Glencore said it was committed to further investment in Mount Isa.

Glencore’s shock decision raised concerns about the economic viability of the 1100-kilometre CopperString high-voltage line, which the state Labor government took over this year.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said the CopperString project – which will unlock the renewable energy zone near Hughenden, as well as connect mineral projects in Mount Isa – was still feasible.

The US has suffered another mass shooting, with at least 22 dead in Lewiston, Maine, according to CNN.

Multiple law enforcement sources said at least 22 people were dead, with up to 60 injured, at two separate shootings at a bowling alley and a bar.

Police have released footage of the alleged shooter.  Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office

Police are searching for the alleged shooter, 40-year-old Robert Card, who is understood to have military experience and certified firearms instructor, CNN said.

Card should be “considered armed and dangerous,” according a Facebook post from the Lewiston Police Department.

Law enforcement officials in Maine describe Card as a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserves.

“Law Enforcement is attempting to locate Robert Card 4/4/1983, as a person of interest regarding the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation this evening. CARD should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts.”
