Thousands take to streets in support of Israel and Palestine amid 'second stage' of war - 9News

Thousands of protesters assembled in the Sydney CBD in solidarity with Israel this morning before marching to Circular Quay.

Supporters held artworks by local and Jewish artists depicting the war as well as images of the people being held hostage in Gaza.

A strip of the CBD was closed off as empty prams with images of the babies and children held hostage filled the streets.

Pairs of shoes and balloons also lined the street to represent adult hostages.

Another Pro-Palestine Rally is scheduled to take place in Sydney this afternoon north of Sydney's Hyde Park.

Supporters will then march to Belmore Park near Sydney's Central Station.

The protests come after weeks of fighting have escalated overnight, with the Israeli Prime minister moving ground forces into Gaza.

Rallies in support of Israel and Palestine are also expected to be held today in Melbourne.

A bombardment, described by Gaza residents as the most intense of the war, knocked out most communications in the territory and largely cut off the besieged enclave's 2.3 million people from the world.

The Israeli military released grainy images on Saturday showing tank columns moving slowly in open areas of Gaza, many apparently near the border, and said warplanes bombed dozens of Hamas tunnels and underground bunkers.

Rocket barrage sends mourners rushing for cover at funeral

Desperate family members met with Netanyahu on Saturday and expressed support for an exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, a swap floated by a Hamas spokesman.

Netanyahu told the nationally televised news conference that Israel is determined to bring back all the hostages, and maintained that the expanding ground operation "will help us in this mission."
