Northern Australia set to swelter, Melbourne to experience warmest Cup Day in six years - NEWS.com.au

Extreme heatwave conditions are being forecast for much of the country’s north this week, with temperatures set to soar into the high thirties and even low forties.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest weather warning forecasts a “low-intensity to severe heatwave” extending across tropical, northern Queensland from Tuesday through to the weekend.

While Western Australia, from the Top End to the far northern tip of Cape York Peninsula can expect a “severe to extreme” heatwave.

Darwin and Cairns are expected to swelter through five consecutive days of 35 degrees, while Broome will hit a high of 37 on Thursday.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Peter Markworth said some areas of Queensland, Northern Territory and WA - particularly inland - could see temperatures as high as the low forties.

“This is quite a prolonged period where these high temperatures are in place,” he said.

“There will also be quite high minimum temperatures for the most part in the low to mid twenties depending on where you are and we are seeing that trend quite persistently.”

Mr Markworth said there was no cooler relief on the way in the seven day forecast.

“Generally the cool change will be a dry surge pushing up that could bring cooler air from the south and rainfall associated with it, but that doesn’t look too likely at this stage,” he said.

It comes as Melbourne is expected to have its warmest Cup Day in six years on Tuesday.

Tomorrow’s forecast of 29 degrees would be the warmest on a Melbourne Cup Day since 2014.

Temperatures will rise into the low-to-mid thirties across western Victoria, with the warmth to remain overnight and into Wednesday.

A cooler change will sweep through late where temperatures will drop to the mid-teens on Thursday.
