Victoria records one new local case of coronavirus - The Age

Victoria has recorded just one new local case of coronavirus in the last day, from more than 37,000 tests.

Two cases were found in international travellers.

It is not yet clear whether the local case is related to the Black Rock Thai restaurant cluster, which grew to 27 on Tuesday.

There are now 41 active cases in the state. The total number of test results received on Tuesday was 37,509.

A Nike store in South Melbourne is among the latest exposure sites announced by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Meanwhile, Gippsland MP Darren Chester has called on the Victorian government to show greater compassion and common sense towards the thousands of Victorians stranded in NSW by the hard border closure.

The state government shut the border to NSW on January 1, as that state deals with its own COVID-19 cases.

Mr Chester, a Nationals MP, said many Victorians had travelled to COVID-free ‘green zones’ in NSW, believing they would be safe to return, before the borders were shut. They were now stranded through no fault of their own, he said.

“We need to be more compassionate than this. We need to find a pathway back for people who have not done anything wrong,” Mr Chester told ABC Radio National.

“Large parts of NSW were described as a green zone. People took that to mean ‘green means go’. There are a lot of people who have travelled to those parts of NSW who thought they were doing the right thing.”

Mr Chester suggested Victoria should allow people who had visited only green zones to get tested for COVID in NSW and then quarantine at home.

But generally, he said the states needed to be less trigger-happy on closing borders.

“We cannot keep shutting borders every time there are a couple of cases. We are one country. We need people to be able to travel within our country. We cannot be precipitously changing the rules when people are already on holidays.”
