Police probe 15 minutes between two car crashes in Alexandra Hills - NEWS.com.au

Police trying to piece together a “tragic” double fatal pedestrian crash in Brisbane on Australia Day are asking for witnesses and those with CCTV in the surrounding area to come forward.

A white Toyota LandCruiser, allegedly stolen by a 17-year-old boy, was involved in two collisions at 5.10pm and 5.25pm at the same intersection in Alexandra Hills on Tuesday.

Video of the first crash, taken by a passing motorist, shows the 4WD slamming into the side of a silver Hyundai at the intersection of Finucane and Vienna Roads.

Police believe the vehicle was stolen from a home in Cleveland between 4pm and 5pm on Tuesday.

By 5.30pm, two pedestrians in Alexandra Hills were dead.

The victims have been identified as 37-year-old Matty Field and Kate Leadbetter, 31, who was six months pregnant.

They were out walking their dogs at the time.

Chris Fleming told The Courier-Mail his wife Angela started recording while in their vehicle late on Tuesday afternoon, after hearing a loud screech.

Posting on Facebook, Mr Fleming said the driver was “causing all havoc in the Redlands”.

In the video, the LandCruiser driver can be seen gesturing out of the window to the driver of the silver Hyundai while both cars are stopped at a red light.

The white 4WD, in the left turning lane, lurches forward a number of times and the rapid gestures continue.

When the light turns green, both vehicles move across the intersection towards the single lane.

The 4WD crashes into the left side of the Hyundai, causing the driver to brake suddenly, before accelerating ahead.

“Oh my God, oh my God,” Ms Fleming can be heard screaming.

The Flemings stopped on Allenby Rd to assist the Hyundai driver who told them nobody had been injured but he had his disabled son in the back of the car.

Ms Fleming also called police.

In a statement on Tuesday, Queensland Police said they believe the LandCruiser “deliberately collided” with the silver Hyundai at the intersection of Vienna and Finucane Roads at 5.10pm “before speeding away”.

“Approximately 5.25pm the LandCruiser was travelling west on Finucane Road when it proceeded through a red light at the same intersection of Vienna Road and collided with a truck,” police said.

“The Toyota LandCruiser has rolled and struck two pedestrians crossing the road, they died at the scene.”

‘JUST 15 MINUTES LATER’

Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd on Wednesday told reporters after receiving a triple-0 call about the first incident, a broadcast had been issued on the police radio systems “highlighting that we were looking for that vehicle”.

It was not identified by officers in the minutes before the next crash.

Mr Codd reiterated that the second incident, involving the same vehicle, occurred “just 15 minutes later”.

“Could I appeal to anybody who may have witnessed any part of the events that occurred in and around Alexandra Hills yesterday afternoon in that vicinity,” he said.

“There may be some people who have been commenting on social media who have not yet contacted police.

“Could I appeal for people to recognise that even the smallest piece of information could be vital in us building the case to understand exactly what the circumstances were to lead to this tragic circumstance.

“Similarly, those people who might have CCTV footage in that vicinity might consider reviewing that CCTV footage to see if it may assist us.”

Asked where police believe the driver went in that intervening period, Mr Codd said that was an important part of their ongoing investigation.

“We know that there’s a 15-minute window that it sped away from colliding with the Hyundai,” he said.

“You could use your own judgment to determine that it’s not travelled too far away from that area.

“We’re less than 24 hours from when this has occurred and we have assembled a very significant investigative team of local detectives supported by our Homicide Investigation Unit and, importantly, our Forensic Crash Unit and they will be – with a fine-tooth comb – going over all the circumstances.”

The driver – a 17-year-old from Waterford West in Logan – ran from the scene.

At 5.30pm, he allegedly stole a set of keys and tried to start a car in the garage of a house on nearby Kingston Ave.

He was stopped by one of the residents and arrested by police.

The teenager is due to face Brisbane Children’s Court on Wednesday on charges including two counts of murder and dangerously operating a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.
