NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has called Western Australia's tough border closure "pointless" after the state recorded a positive COVID-19 case.
Key points:
- Any traveller from WA will need to stay home for five days and get a COVID-19 swab
- The infected WA hotel quarantine worker visited several venues
- One flight from WA into Sydney was screened last night, though no risk was found
Mr Barilaro said he "felt for citizens going into lockdown" but that the case had shown "WA's hard border lockdown has proved pointless".
"I recommend the WA Premier considers adopting the NSW strategy to manage this virus — because today WA has learnt first-hand an elimination strategy is unrealistic," he tweeted on Sunday evening.
Overnight NSW Health ordered any traveller from Western Australia to adhere to the same stay-at-home rules they would be subjected to in the state.
That means any travellers from WA since January 25 must stay at home for five days, ending 9:00pm on Friday, February 5.
Any arrivals since January 25 who visited the local government areas of Perth, the Peel region and the South-West region must also urgently seek a COVID-19 swab.
Passengers who arrived in Sydney on a flight from Perth last night were screened, but none of the passengers had been to affected venues, NSW Health said.
WA has entered into a snap five-day lockdown in response to the COVID-19 case, a hotel quarantine security guard in his 20s.
The security guard visited several venues while infectious, sparking the stay-at-home orders for around two million WA residents.
Mr Barilaro's admonishments come after many months of ill-will between the top state politicians in Queensland, NSW and Western Australia.
On January 22, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said WA owed her state millions for Sydney's costly hotel quarantine program, which takes returning overseas travellers from every state and territory.
Mr McGowan quickly returned serve, saying if he was "unkind" he would say that NSW should receive a bill "for the Ruby Princess and all the trauma that caused all the other states".
The Ruby Princess cruise ship outbreak, which took place in March 2020, led to more than 650 cases and 28 deaths in Australia.
NSW's new Public Health Order requires all new arrivals to complete an interstate traveller declaration confirming whether they attended any of the venues listed on the WA Health website, and provide contact details.
It comes as Queensland relaxed all border closures with NSW today, following six weeks of border permits and a hotel quarantine order.
Victoria and South Australia have also eased their border restrictions with most travellers now only having to undergo a COVID-19 test on arrival.
NSW Health confirmed they are "closely monitoring the situation" in WA and will update advice for NSW people accordingly.
