Sydney news: Second COVID-19 case at Liverpool Hospital; Cleaner at aged-care home tests positive - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Second COVID-19 case at Liverpool Hospital

A healthcare worker at Liverpool and Campbelltown hospitals has returned a positive test to COVID-19.

NSW Health said the operating theatres at both hospitals had been deep cleaned after a healthcare worker tested positive to coronavirus last night.

It comes after a patient tested positive at Liverpool Hospital earlier this week. Contact tracing is continuing in relation to both cases.

Emergency surgery is continuing, however non-urgent surgery has been postponed at both hospitals.

Three paramedics working at Liverpool ambulance station have also tested positive to coronavirus.

Staff dispute at Westmead Hospital

Meanwhile, cleaners at Westmead Hospital are refusing to enter its COVID ward, claiming they have been denied access to personal protective equipment.

The Health Servies Union said the workers had not been given properly fitting masks and were told they would not be able to shower at the hospital before returning home.

Staff are concerned this will heighten the risk of spreading the virus to their families at home and to the wider community.

A spokesperson for Westmead Hospital said it was working to address staff concerns and ensure they had access to appropriate PPE.

The hospital said strict infection control guidelines were in place to keep staff and patients safe.

A contract cleaner at a residential aged-care home in Sydney’s west has tested positive to coronavirus.

A spokesman for Minchinbury Manor in Rooty Hill said the facility had been locked down as a precaution.

He said about 90 per cent of its 134 residents were fully vaccinated, mostly with Pfizer, and there were no cases among them to date.

Daily testing will be undertaken of both residents and staff, while the cleaner and five of her close contacts in the facility have been immediately isolated.

A Sydney court is today expected to rule on an appeal by former detectives Roger Rogerson and Glen McNamara against their life sentences for murder.

Rogerson and McNamara have appealed against their convictions and life sentences for the murder of Jamie Gao, who was shot dead in a Padstow storage unit in 2014.

His body was found dumped in waters off Cronulla. A sentencing judge found Rogerson and McNamara formed an agreement to kill Gao so they could steal the methamphetamine he was going to supply them.

The judge described their criminal enterprise as extensive in its planning and brutal in its execution.

New COVID-19 exposure sites

A petrol station in south-western NSW is among some of the new COVID-19 exposure sites listed by NSW Health.

Two Sydney removalists who had been travelling interstate went through the Shell station at Hay on July 10.

A McDonalds drive-through in Puncbowl in Sydney's south west on July 8 has been included due to an infected worker.

Also in Punchbowl, a Chemist Warehouse shop has been added to the list on July 8.

A Service NSW office in Liverpool and a cake shop in Fairfield are on the close contacts list, where people must get tested and isolate for 14 days regardless of the result.

Modelling shows lockdown could go for weeks

New research shows that under the current settings, Sydney could be in COVID-19 lockdown for weeks, with even a small drop in compliance extending that period significantly.

The University of Sydney has used complex modelling to forecast the city's outbreak, factoring in the high infectiousness of the Delta variant and other measures such as school closures.

It found that if 80 per cent of Sydneysiders complied with social distancing measures it would take a month for cases to reduce from the current peak of 112 cases to below 10.

That's two weeks later than the July 30 state government deadline currently in place.
