Live Breaking News: NSW and Sydney lockdown updates and Covid-19 case numbers - NEWS.com.au

It has been widely reported that the state’s crisis cabinet reached the decision last night, with a formal announcement due this morning.

It is understood cabinet  made the call but decided against introducing any tighter restrictions for now, despite soaring case numbers and a rising death toll.

Restrictions are also likely to remain in place for regions outside Greater Sydney, including the Central Coast.

The Sydney man who breached the city's lockdown to travel to Queensland while positive with the Delta Covid strain has been identified as tradie George Thompson.

Police alleged Mr Thompson left Sydney to meet up with a flight attendant in Ballina during lockdown, with the pair then travelling through the Sunshine State.

Yesterday, both were slapped with hefty fines for breaking Queensland's border rules, and both have tested positive.

Mr Thompson was hit with a $10,000 penalty and is currently being treated for Covid in hospital.

NSW Opposition leader Chris Minns has told ABC News Breakfast the locked-down state was in desperate need of Jobkeeper payments.

The federal government has so far refused to reintroduce the subsidy, but Mr Minns said it was essential for businesses.

"We have got businesses that are doing it tough, businesses that will probably close their doors unless they get more financial support from the Commonwealth government and this was a real success for the Federal Government over the last 12 months," he said.

"I don't understand why they aren't rolling it out again…we're praying common sense prevails."

The extension hasn't been formally confirmed yet, but details of exactly what life in NSW will look like form Friday have already been leaked.

In addition to the "singles bubble" and rapid antigen testing for essential workers reported earlier, there are also reports that construction will get the green light to restart across the city, excluding the LGAs in the virus epicentre in the southwest and west.

Rapid testing for Year 12 students could also be on the table, which would allow HSC students to return to schools.

It will now be easier for adults aged over 18 to get an AstraZeneca jab, with some pharmacies joining the roll out from today.

By the end of the week, all NSW adults will be able to receive the vaccine at health clinics and mass vaccination centres, with around 450 pharmacies also joining the program from next week.

While the lockdown extension seems to be a done deal, the NSW Government is also reportedly planning to roll out new rules from Friday, when the lockdown was supposed to end.

Many media outlets are reporting that a "singles bubble" could be on the cards to help those who live alone socialise with another individual.

Rapid antigen testing has also supposedly been considered, which can deliver Covid test results in under 30 minutes.

The government is also pushing to get the majority of the state vaccinated by the end of August.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is expected to formally announce another month-long extension of the state's lockdown within hours.

It has been widely reported that crisis cabinet decided last night to extend the lockdown – which has been in place since June 26 – for another four weeks.

It means those under lockdown won't be free until late August at the earliest, although the possibility of yet another extension remains.

It comes as the state recorded its worst day yet since the current crisis began yesterday, with 172 new infections.

The death toll currently stands at 10.
