The disability community, including support workers, are on high alert after the ACT recorded 19 new Covid infections bringing its outbreak to 121.
Out of that number 17 were linked while two remain under investigation, although six were infectious in the community.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the case numbers were likely to rise during the next few days.
“It does reflect the situation that we face, that there will still be new cases in the days ahead and what we are striving for is that all of those new cases are not infectious in the community,” he said.
Mr Barr said there was concern for a cluster of 10-12 “in our disability community” including support workers.
“Unfortunately we have a small cluster of cases in our disability community; a little into double digits, around 10 to 12,” he said on Sunday.
“This includes people living with disability and disability support workers. The government acknowledges the anxiety that this is causing and can advise that we have been actively supporting the affected individuals and the broader community.”
However, Mr Barr said the territory’s outlook was positive.
“Overall, the community response remains very good. In ... relation to vaccinations, Canberrans continue to come forward to be vaccinated in great numbers,” he said.
“We have reached around 60 per cent of the population with the first dose now administered. The ACT‘s vaccination rates continue to be well above the national average.”
On Saturday the territory recorded eight new cases with all of them linked to known infections and all were isolating.
Barr described the figure as “good progress”.
But ACT chief health officer Kerryn Coleman warned residents not to celebrate yet, noting Saturday’s numbers did not include cases recorded after 8pm.
“Any cases that come in after 8pm overnight will be included in tomorrow’s case numbers,” Dr Coleman said.
“(This) means that today’s case (number) is probably a little artificially low, and tomorrow we’ll be back up to possibly what we were seeing yesterday or the day before.”
ACT festivals Floriade and Nightfest have been cancelled as a result of the lockdown.
