Wastewater tests to ramp up following ‘unexpected’ detections

By Roy Ward

The Victorian department of health will ramp up wastewater testing in a number of areas around the state after more positive detections.

The Chief Health Officer’s update on Sunday reported a number of “strong, repeat” detections in the Glenroy-Broadmeadows area between July 28 and August 6 with anyone in those areas who has any symptoms asked to get a COVID-19 test.

The update also said unexpected detections were made in the Benalla and Healesville catchments with Healesville including the towns of Badger Creek and Coldstream.

Anyone who works in or has visited Benalla between August 3-5 or Healesville between August 1-5 is urged to watch for COVID-19 symptoms and seek a test if they do.

“The wastewater testing program is designed as an early warning system and a cautious approach is always taken when these detections are found,” the update read.

“The Department of Health has increased wastewater testing in the areas listed above and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Victoria reported a total of 13 new cases for the 24 hours to Sunday morning with 11 locally acquired and two in hotel quarantine.

There are 100 active cases in the state with 96 local and four overseas acquired cases.

Six COVID-19 cases are in hospital with one in intensive care, the total of confirmed cases in Victoria since the beginning of the pandemic is 21,010.

Young detainee tests positive at western Sydney jail

By Laura Chung

A detainee at a juvenile jail in western Sydney has tested positive to COVID-19.

The male detainee entered the Cobham Youth Justice Centre near Penrith on Friday and tested positive within 24 hours.

All new detainees are tested and put in 14-day quarantine when they enter the facility, a Department of Communities and Justice spokeswoman said.

“The detainee is being quarantined in medical isolation and is being monitored closely,” she said.

“Youth Justice is working closely with NSW Health to trace those who may have been in contact with the individual.”

COVID variant names written in stars after Greek alphabet is used

By Sarah Newey

New coronavirus variants are to be named after star constellations when all the letters in the Greek alphabet are used, a senior World Health Organisation official has said.

Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical chief for COVID-19, said the UN health agency was already looking at names for mutations amid fears there will be more concerning variants than the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet.

The World Health Organisation is looking into a new COVID variant naming system once all the Greek letters have been used up.

That system was introduced in late May and so far 11 mutations have been named: four variants of concern, including delta and beta; four variants of interest, such as eta and lambda; plus epsilon, zeta and theta, thought to be “of interest” but since downgraded.

Seriously ill COVID-infected crew member on ventilator in Perth

By Lauren Pilat

A COVID-infected crew member from Chinese bulk carrier MV Darya Krishna docked at Fremantle Port is in a Perth hospital on a ventilator in a critical condition.

“We wish him and his family all the best but it’s quite critical now,” WA Premier Mark McGowan said.

“He’s on a ventilator in one of our hospitals so that’s a sad situation.”

Mr McGowan said WA recorded zero new cases overnight despite concerns about the man who went to Cloudbreak and concerns about particles of COVID-19 detected in wastewater in Broome.

Another ship with COVID-infected crew members, BBC California, is set to sail and leave the WA coast Sunday evening.

“We’ve had issues with the BBC California … we’ll be pleased to see her sail, that reduces another risk to the state,” Mr McGowan said.

“Obviously ships have been a big risk and we have put in place rules to make sure we protect West Australians. I’m advised the crew are completely better and not infectious so it doesn’t pose a threat to the state.

“We’re very hopeful we won’t see any more cases on ships coming into our state.“

WA recorded no new cases overnight.

Woolworths Caroline Springs added to exposure sites

By Roy Ward

Victorian contact tracers have added four visits to Woolworths Caroline Springs to the state’s list of COVID-19 exposure sites this afternoon.

A COVID-19 case was at the supermarket at 8 Commercial Road, Caroline Springs in Melbourne’s west during parts of August 2-5 and all visits have been listed as tier two exposures so anyone at the store during the times listed has been asked to get a COVID test and isolate themselves until they receive a negative test.

The case was at Woolworths Caroline Springs on August 2 from 8.40am to 5.50pm, August 3 from 5pm to 9.10pm, August 4 from 8.30am to 5.30pm and August 5 from 8.30am to 10.15am.

The Victorian exposure sites list has 151 entries as of 3pm AEST Sunday.

Opinion: Blame the lockdown on business urgers trying to wish the virus away

By Ross Gittins

I’ve yet to see any of the perpetrators – Liberal tribal mythmakers, industry lobby groups and business’ media cheer squad – admit to their part in the humbling of that “gold standard” virus fighter, NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian (a woman I quite like).

All those business people feeling the pain of NSW’s protracted lockdown – which seems not to be getting anywhere, with no end in sight – have no one to blame but the short-sighted, self-centred urgers on their own side.

The great “learning” from our earlier struggles to control the coronavirus – particularly Victorian premier Daniel Andrews’ struggles this time last year – was the wisdom of the medicos’ advice that the exponential nature of pandemics meant the best strategy was to go early, go hard.

Good afternoon

By Roy Ward

G’day everyone. It’s Roy Ward and I’ve moved over from the Tokyo Olympics coverage to take charge of the COVID-19 live blog this afternoon.

A big thanks to the excellent Laura Chung for her work this morning as today’s COVID-19 press conferences came and went.

Please feel free to keep leaving comments on the blog and enjoy the afternoon and evening to come.

Where we stand at 2.15pm

Thanks for joining me this morning - it’s been a busy one. I’m now handing over the blog to my colleague Roy Ward.

Here is where we stand as of 2.15pm:

  • NSW has recorded 262 locally acquired cases of COVID-19, the third highest daily number on record, as the front of the outbreak moves into Penrith with 12 suburbs plunged into a tighter lockdown. About 70 of the new cases were in the community for some of their infectious period and the status of more than 100 cases remains unknown. NSW has recorded one new COVID-19 related death - a woman in her 80s who was not vaccinated. The woman was a resident of Summer Hill’s Wyoming aged care facility and died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. It is the 28th death recorded in this outbreak.

  • Locked-down south-east Queensland residents will be relieved from stay-at-home orders at 4pm after nine new local COVID-19 cases were reported on Sunday, one sparking new concerns in the state’s far north. Restrictions including mask wearing will remain for another two weeks for the 11 south-east Queensland local government areas, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said. However, residents in Cairns and Yarrabah will go into a three-day lockdown after a taxi driver tested positive for COVID-19 and was infectious in the community for 10 days.

  • The nation’s first drive-through vaccination hub will be set up at a former Bunnings site in Melbourne’s west while Victorians aged 18-39 will be able to receive the AstraZeneca jab at nine of the state’s mass vaccination centres from Monday. Children aged 12-15 with underlying health conditions will also be allowed to receive the Pfizer vaccine at state-run clinics. Victoria recorded 11 new cases on Sunday.

‘Click and collect your immunity’: A quip many might’ve missed during Victoria’s press conference

By David Estcourt

As Victoria’s press conference drew to a close questions began to zero in on the mechanics of the Bunnings drive-in vaccine facility that the state government launched today.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was asked if any sausages would be sizzling at the Bunnings involved in the “soft launch” of the program, which would allow Victorians to receive their vaccine from inside their car.“I don’t think there are any sausages sizzling at that Bunnings,” Mr Andrews said.

“It’s click and collect, as it needs to be.”

This throwaway line was seized upon by Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton, who said in the background of the press conference while not at the microphone, that Victorians would now be able to click and collect their immunity.

“Yes, click and collect immunity from serious disease,” Mr Andrews joked, “as the Chief Health Officer just said.“
