Big payment scheme unveiled for Stolen Generations victims - NEWS.com.au

An unprecedented $82,000 per person direct payment has been announced in what is a huge development in recognition for victims of the Stolen Generations.

The payment, which is perhaps the most significant acknowledgment of the historical abuse and trauma suffered by Indigenous Australians since the 2008 national apology, is part of the federal government’s new $378.6m financial and wellbeing redress scheme for living Stolen Generations members.

The scheme will provide eligible applicants:

  • A one-off payment of $75,000 in recognition of the harm caused by forced removal
  • and
  • A one-off healing assistance payment of $7000 in recognition that the action to facilitate healing will be specific to each individual

Along with the $82,000 total payments, eligible survivors will also be given the opportunity to confidentially tell their story about the impact of their removal to a senior official within government, have it acknowledged, and receive a face-to-face or written apology for their removal and resulting trauma.

To be eligible for the scheme, recipients must be:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
  • Under the age of 18 at the time they were removed from their family by government bodies (including the police), churches/missions and/or welfare bodies, and in circumstances where their Indigeneity was a factor in their removal
  • Removed while living in the Northern Territory, ACT or Jervis Bay Territory prior to those areas’ respective self-governments

The Northern Territory became self-governing on July 1 1978, meaning Indigenous Australians removed from their families up until that date are eligible for the scheme.

The ACT became self-governing in December 1988, meaning Indigenous Australians removed from their families up until that date are eligible.

Jervis Bay remains a non-self-governing external territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, meaning Indigenous Australians removed from their families at any time are eligible.

Indigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt said that supporting intergenerational healing was key to the government’s commitment to Closing the Gap.

“This announcement reflects the government’s commitment to recognise and acknowledge the wrongs of the past as part of the nation’s journey to reconciliation,” Senator Wyatt said.

“This scheme represents a major step forward towards healing.”

Applications for the scheme will open on March 1 and will run until June 2026.

Families of any Stolen Generations survivors who pass away between August 5, 2021 and March 1, 2022 will also be able to submit an application on the survivor’s behalf.
