GoFundMe created for parents of baby who died after accident involving magpie at Brisbane park - NEWS.com.au

A five-month-old baby girl who died after a tragic accident involving a magpie at a Brisbane park has been identified as Mia.

Mia, whose name was shared through a GoFundMe created on behalf of her parents, was rushed to hospital on Sunday with critical injuries after her mother fell while holding her, after trying to duck a swooping magpie.

The little girl later died.

The incident happened at Glindemann Park near the corner of Lawn and Steele streets, Holland Park West, just after midday on Sunday.

“We responded to reports that a mum had fallen with a baby in her arms, reportedly ducking to avoid a magpie,” a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.

“The Queensland Ambulance Service medical director and critical care paramedics responded and transported the infant to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.”

Katie and Sophie, who are sisters of parents Jacob and Simone, established the fundraiser to help the couple.

Sophie told NCA NewsWire Mia‘s parents were “absolutely devastated” and the entire family was ”grieving deeply”.

“In honour of our beautiful little angel and her amazing parents we would appreciate this go fund me page being shared with the community,” Sophie said.

“This will enable us to show Jacob and Simone how much support they have, and to try and raise enough money to allow them the opportunity to have as much time off work as needed without the added stress of finances, to grieve the loss of their beautiful little girl.”

On the GoFundMe, a heartbreaking tribute to the infant was also shared.

“Everything about Mia was perfect from her head full of hair, to her tiny little nose and her little long toes,” the tribute read.

“Mia’s arrival made Jacob and Simone’s lives complete, they constantly doted over her, showered her with love, and shared her for all their loved ones to adore.

“Beautiful she was, and loved by all who got to meet her. The joy Mia brought to all of our lives cannot be described in words, but is certainly felt in all of our hearts.”

The sisters said Monday’s incident was a “blow no one could ever imagine”.

“On this day, in Glendemann Park, Holland Park West, an absolute tragic and sudden accident occurred, where beautiful Mia, at only five young months of age, grew her little angel wings and left this world for the final time.

“Shattering everyone’s hearts, and crushing Jacob and Simone’s world in the blink of an eye where no day would ever be the same.

“No words can begin to describe the torture Jacob and Simone are going through.”

The fundraiser will cover the costs of Mia’s funeral as well as personal leave for the parents.

“(The goal is to) raise some money to not only help Jacob and Simone pay for the cost of Mia’s funeral, but to enable Jacob and Simone to take as much time away from work and the world as they need, and to relieve all of the financial stress associated with this absolute horrific tragedy,” the page reads.”

Both Katie and Sophie live outside of Queensland and are frantically trying to organise an exemption to cross the border.

The GoFundMe has already raised more than $36,000 towards its $50,000 target.

The magpie had reportedly been aggressive in recent weeks and questions have been raised as to why Brisbane City Council did not have it removed earlier.

A Holland Park resident said they had complained to council about the bird, telling 9 News Brisbane “this magpie swoops everyone, every time.”

Council has erected several warning signs of magpie swooping in the area, while residents have laid flowers at the site.
