Lisa Wilkinson has pleaded with Queenslanders to “follow all the rules” as state authorities scramble to control the growing outbreak.
There is concern that Queensland, which saw nine new cases recorded on Sunday, has all the makings of a “significant event” like Sydney.
Sunday also marked the biggest daily increase in local cases Queensland has seen in nearly 12 months.
There are now 53 active cases in Queensland., with authorities announcing a three-day snap lockdown on Saturday to combat the virus’ spread.
Wilkinson implored Queenslanders to view NSW – which recorded 239 new cases on Sunday – as a warning.
“Please take the example of what has happened in Sydney,” she told The Project.
“Just follow all the rules, because that’s the only way to get through this thing … (it’s) harder for them too, because they’ve never been through one of these full lockdowns before, so good luck.”
Wilkinson’s comments echo those made by Queenland authorities, who have made no secret of their concern over the outbreak.
The state’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said there had been a “enormous number of exposure sites” and the virus “could be anywhere” in southeast Queensland.
The outbreak centres around a medical student who travelled extensively throughout Brisbane while infectious.
Queensland’s Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the crisis in Sydney was a pressing factor in the decision to lockdown as they “have to get this right”.
“New South Wales had one case on 16 June. Thirty-eight days later, they are at 3000 cases,” she said on Saturday.
“From that one person — 38 days, 3000 cases. Sadly, 13 people have died just from that one cluster.”
Queensland outbreak has makings of ‘significant event’
It comes as an infectious disease expert warned Queensland authorities were facing a situation similar to the Sydney outbreak.
Director of Infectious Diseases at Mater Health, Dr Paul Griffin, told Weekend Today that there were “concerning elements” in Queensland’s outbreak which meant it could easily get out of control.
“This one is very different. This one really does have the makings of something significant,” Dr Griffin said.
“There’s a lot of concerning elements about this, including where these people have been, how many exposure sites there are, how many people are already infected as a result.
“So I do think we need a comprehensive and swift range of mitigation strategies which is what we’ve seen.”
Queensland implemented a snap three day lockdown on Saturday afternoon in a bid to control cases.
Residents in 11 southeast Queensland LGAs have been ordered to stay home except for essential work, groceries, medical care, caregiving or exercise within 10km of their home.
Given how quickly the virus had already spread, Dr Griffin warned Queensland has “the makings of a very significant event”.
